A friend of mine has modified his Nissan 370Z with a part similar to what I have in the picture below. You can open or close the valve at will by the press of a remote button - and it sounds awesome! It is kind of like open headers [one for each side near the rear of the car]. It is louder, but not massively, which is exactly what I want.

I am thinking of doing exactly the same thing but want to get some opinions before I jump in and do this - I am cautious like that :) well what do you think?

I'm more interested in pop & crackle than how loud the exhaust is :) They are pretty nice exhausts on 2.2/3.0. Nice note and occasional pop & crackle. But I'd like to turn the P&C up a little.

I think P&C is programmable in the DME, though perhaps only by changing other engine characteristics as well, so I'm going to be taking a look at some point.

I want to be able to clone whole DMEs too so the P&C is just part of that exercise. DMEs are very expensive to have repaired and silly money to replace from BMW. So I think it's worth looking at. I reckon it can be done from home.

I've studied the EWS and I can clone these now.

Thanks. I found the 2.2 had a slightly better note than my 3.0, as far as I recall. Good luck with the programming that's one are I am fearful to start looking at, the wrench gripping is challenging enough!

I used to be a computer programmer so it’s a bit more familiar to me. Although using that term tells you how long ago it was. I think they call them software developers these days...

You just need to be careful that the exhaust doesn't terminate under the car as the fumes will enter the cabin.

If you decide to decat, you will also need to be aware of flame spit if there is nothing between the back of the exhaust valve and the exhaust exit.

Make sure that you get the correct size - the M is 2.25" per side. I don't know what size your pipes are.

Other than that - go for it - it's what I am doing (sort of ;) )

[edit] Size is 2.25"[/edit]

I suspect you are right as there only seems to be one system available. If they were really good, they would be copied by every Tom, Dick and Harry. But nothing ventured...

There is a pull cable option.

I’ve looked into such systems and been to see a place that has done a few to try and get it done on the famil bus.

Apparently the only electric systems that are robust to last a few years are OEM grade as per Audi etc but they suffer from rattles of the valve bits which are not separately replaceable.

A much more robust set up is a vacuum operated set up but parts will be a lot more.

I’ve had to ditch the idea for now as too costly but I’m still drawn to it - I just think having the option of load when you want and silent the next is ideal.

A manual cable pull system is a good idea if it can be operated from in Car.

A system with a cap that is removed as desired is also an option but a pain if you have to crawl under to pop it on and off but fine on a high ground clearance.

At least the electric car will solve all these problems as we’d just be able to buy the exhaust note we want on iTunes...

i reckon they can be done for £150 - 200 depending on the kit used.

i love the idea of one but wont bother unless i replace the exhaust at some point as mine is pretty crusty

You can actually buy a BMW 2 wire vacuum switch so it can be used with an OEM dash button (ASC button etc)

the valves can be had for £70 off ebay

small bit of wiring and vacuum tubing

welding and cutting of the exhaust

I'm hoping to do it for a little bit less than that (but not much).

£30 for steel and will have about half of it left over.
£4 for switch
£30 for valve
£15 for hole saw
£5 for wire and terminals
£20 for welding consumables
