You can do it with the manifold on, however people say it only really works when fitting genuine bmw parts

So if it was aftermarket then they most likely took it off

I have just finished changing the PCV/CCV on mine, and took the intake off, both to make the job easier and to replace many other pipes under it!

The PCV was genuine BMW

Good for you going genuine!

Then I presume we can only guess they had the intake off, as seen through the missing nut

However, I have heard it is definitely doable with the intake on.

It is doable, not too difficult at all, I warm the connections up with a heat gun and they clip together no problem.

The things you learn from doing it regularly!! No wonder mine took a bit of a shove to go together!

I used a bit of silicone grease on the o-rings which helped a bit,

hopefully I won't have to change it again, but your method sounds good

It’s annoying when you learn these simple tricks after you have struggled. Ant Stark and I struggled with a top gasket falling out only to watch @Lee hold it place with a zip tie.

Personally I blame lack of common sense

This could well be the cause of all your issues. you'll be loosing vacuum and sucking air in! I think they're M7 nuts using a 11mm socket, very BMW specific.

Works the other way round during normal running mate, when we smoke test we do a positive pressure test where the smoke blows out, when the engine is running its running the opposite under a vacuum. Still stands this could well be your issue.

Thanks. I assume that some parts need to be removed for access to torque them down properly

Apparently they didn’t take the manifold but did spot the two missing nuts. They said that no smoke when tested but @Lee explained it could still be leaking air. Trying to find out what needs to be stripped to better access them.

Taking the air distributor, wiring harness, maybe fuel rail, then you should be able to get them on

It wont be leaking air, it will be sucking air in.

Remove that manifold cover with the two 10mm nuts and you'll have clear access. 10 minute job max.

Thanks. I’ll get @AntStark my unofficial mechanic on it right away. Swapped these out.
