Microsoft Security Essentials

Interesting, not being an IT person.

Norton Anti Virus decided to do some weird stuff tonight, so I kicked it off the PC (having paid for it as well) and replaced it with Microsoft Security Essentials (free software)

Wow, did that speed up my computer or what!!!!
Suppose it must of been the size of the Norton package?

Norton is just too controlling IMHO. My other half always had it on his PC's but he's finally ditched it and moved over to Kaspersky which IMHO is a great product and can be obtained at a great price - it's actually reduced from what I paid - £18.95 for a 3 user 1 year licence... bargain..

Doesn't surprise me at all HT. It needs a decent hi spec machine for it not to slow it down. I've hated Nortons for years, but one of the problems is that it gets bundled on new machines to lure (sucker) you in to paying for it. Same marketing that works for McAfee and the likes.

I wont pay for anti virus software and a few of the free ones are more than adequate. Using Avast AV on my Windows 7 desktop at the moment, and the built in windows firewall. Theres even a version of Avast for my Android phone. Kept me safe even with all the, errrm, car sites I frequent.

My laptop runs a version of Linux so I don't need anything at all on that

I would agree with you to a point there.... other halfs pc that he had it on before ditching it was a gaming pc that wouldn't have looked out of place at NASA but it really did affect the performance.

The first thing I do on getting a new computer is remove Norton. I have been using AVG free for years now and find it works in the backround without any inconvenience to me.
