Evening

I am in search of a bit of a throatier sound for my M52B28 Single Vanos. The standard exhaust is a little tame for my liking and instead of buying a full new exhaust, I have encountered another M52B28TU which has had its middle box deleted and sounds pretty good. The TU has a twin pipe instead of a single pipe. Not sure how much difference it would make.

Has anyone else done this on their 2.8 and had good results?

The job doesn't look too difficult for an exhaust company to fabricate and weld a stainless pipe in place of the middle resonator box.

Thoughts very welcome. :)

I've just had a new small custom back box, it does sound good on the most part but be prepared for drone at certain ranges. It is definitely loud though

Resonator boxes are put there for a reason and it's usually to do with reducing unwanted back pressures, not particularly to reduce noise. That's the silencers job. I would be wary of just taking it out.
It sounds expensive, but a properly designed exhaust replacement is the way to go in my opinion.

I was recommended by a local exhaust company to do a resonator delete £175 bit dear just to cut out old and replace with a straight pipe. Was warned of it by several members as can cause droning especially on motorways. May be better with a cat back sports exhaust at least if you dont like it can put back to standard.

Thanks for the responses!

If all goes well, I might be looking at ordering a new Backbox. Its not a cheap one but have messaged the retailer as they do as price match on any component "in the world". (Optional Clarkson Accent)

I also have £250 in vouchers from my work to spend which could come in very very handy. I didn't have these vouchers before the first post.

To be continued. However, lead time from ordering to delivery is up to 50 days as its hand made in Deutschland. :pompus:

Hey. I just replaced my previous owners aftermarket exhaust with a new aftermarket one. Firstly I ran a single in with twin pipe out, with resonator and hi-flow cat. It was a touch too noisy, and did drone. I found the offending frequency was 117Hz so I designed a Helmholtz resonator to eliminate the drone, which it did. I also added a heat shielded cone filter up front to add some nice high frequency intake sounds, and it works really well. Its still a tiny bit loud but it sounds awesome. Often exhaust systems quieten up a little when they heat cycle so ill do a few more k's to see if it reduces a little at the 1500-2500rpm area. If not Ill add another slightly bigger resonator in line, but there is bugger all room in the Z3 platform
