Am sure this is one of the simplest fixes going, but I thought I'd ask first.

A few days ago I noticed the passenger door mirror wobbling going over bumps in the road - must have a look I thought. This morning the drivers door mirror was wobbling too. My mistake was to just touch it while I was driving down the road. You've guessed - the mirror fell off
Amazingly, it didn't break. Not then anyway. The van following me drove over it and didn't do it any favours though. :(
It looks simple enough - looks like the mirror simply sticks on to a pad on the mirror assembly or does part of the assembly have to be changed too? If so, how does the backing for the mirror come out of the surround.
Looks like its the same part for left and right hand cars - mirrored on both sides with the convex edge both sides. Simply reverse the mirror for each side?
Anyone got a spare or a part number?

When i first read this i thought it was the whole mirror but it sounds like just the glass so not so bad.

Yes - The glass has come adrift from the plastic back that has the heating element. Looks like a common issue. BMW want £104 for a replacement. I'm guessing that includes a technician to visit, install the new mirror and give it a polish afterwards.

Now that's a result, bad luck in the first place though :( hope all goes well.
Looks like one of those fiddly jobs that needs the knack to prise the old mirror assembly out of the housing. The LR is dead easy. A couple of screws underneath and the top comes off giving access to all the gubbins inside.
Got to get some double sided tape (or preferably film) to fix the NS mirror. It will have to withstand heat as well as transmitting the heat to the glass.

none anymore
If the heating element is still attached to the mirror housing, all you need is a self adhesive mirror glass. One of mine came off a just after I bought the car, the new one I got from ebay had the self adhesive already on it, I just peeled the backing off and stuck it on. Heating element works fine. You might need to remove the heating element from the back of the one you have ordered before you fit it.

The one that came off was run over by the van behind me and was somewhat broken afterwards. Realised after I'd ordered a replacement that had the heating element that I could probably have got away with just a mirror. However, the backing that contains the heater element is starting to delaminate so a replacement at that cost isn;t the end of the earth.
Am looking for some decent heavy duty double sided film to properly re-attach the NS mirror.

Why do some of these car companies take the p*ss. £10 sounds a whole lot better. £94 for fuel most excellent
Because they make very little profit selling new cars so load up the parts prices.......and those flashy showrooms aren't cheap to run you know.

Absolutely @Gail!! The % of markup on parts is incredable compared to what they pAy the suppliers for them and the suppliers are still making a huge profit for what it costs to produce!! JIM

My passenger mirror spectacularly went on M40 :) £7 ebay replacement worked fine though. Unlock the whole assembly (there is a latch on bottom of mirror pad), clean it with nail varnish remover and stick ebay stuff to it :)

I was expecting something along those lines @Gail! And in your case they are getting more than their monies worth I'm sure yet they are also pocketing a huge amount for themselves. They should be giving you more, so you go tell them what I've said and I'm certain you'll be getting a huge raise!! JIM

The eBay one arrived today. Clearly nothing like the quality of the OEM one. It's slightly smaller and doesn't quite fit the surround. Should have just ordered the glass and used existing fitting.
I couldn't get enough leverage on the clip to rotate it so I ended up taking the plastic plate off the bottom and could then get the clip moved by pinching the mirror back and front.
It does the job but I might try and get an original mirror now.
Just got to fix the near side mirror now. Got some double sided plastic film that I can cut to shape. That I think is how the original glass was fixed.

Passenger side fixed - mirror plate removed but glass still well stuck along one edge to the heated backing. Separated enough and glass glue squeezed in between. Hope fully it will get some UV to cure the glue (but maybe not today).
