Winter's very nearly here so we start taking in the ways and strays for Zed time. We decided to hit it hard on the first weekend. We don't normally do a full subframe build in one day but this time thought why not.

Cast and crew for the day: @pgunter @GazHyde @Oldguysrule @Lee @mwpe @Jamie Macdonald @Mnbrennan

Mike wanted to refresh the main subframe bushes, he'd done a set on his E30 and didn't fancy doing it alone this time round. Also knowing the way Mike drives his Zed round Scotland it's probably best they get refreshed.

This time round we decided to tackle the subframe off axle stands (instead of the ramp), we actually find this easier as you can wiggle under the car from all angles.

We had @pgunter on photo duties today but he disappeared early today so the photos stop suddenly. We started just after 10am and Mike rolled out the garage shortly after 5pm. We did down tools for an Hour for a coffee and chat.

Just lining the car up and jacking from the Diff.

Once on the stands the first thing off is the spare wheel and carrier.

Next it was disconnect the shocks and remove the springs, along with removing the 4 nuts holding the prop shaft in place.

Gaz jumped into removing the handbrake cables while I started blanking the brake lines.

It's worth noting that because this had a one piece exhaust system and the manifold bolts totally shot we decided to remove the subframe in stages. So this next shot shows the nearside swing arm coming out.

Once both sides were removed we started to loosen the beam.

Not forgetting the dreaded M6 cap heads, this time these were a breeze to remove. Just out of shot under the plastic.

Then with a wiggle to release from the prop shaft we have a beam and diff.

WE INTERRUPT THIS SUBFRAME BUILD FOR A MEMBER OF STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT!

Anyway moving on =))
Time to warm up the old bushes and press them out, I nearly set Gaz on fire which I found very funny and he didnt.

Followed shortly after by a fresh bush. Very easy to press out once they are soft, apply plenty of grease and press back in.

The reassembly was very much the reverse :D

No real show stoppers although we had the diff spline come out with the shaft which has never happened before.

I have a feeling the next zed in the shed is @Tearoom.

A massive thankyou to the Zedshed team for todays' work, I was only a spectator for most of the time as they obviously have this job off to a tee. It was great to get it all done in one day. Thanks again. :):):)

Wow!

In the time you guys did a subframe today I only managed to wash two cars, remove a loose front spoiler and find (but not fix) the headlight vertical aim sensor on missus car!
I even had the trolley jack and axle stand out!

Did manage to slightly flatten the Z3 wheel chock when chock when I put it in Drive - it doesn’t do well against the weight of 6 series it seems!
Didn’t break anything which is good but didn’t really fix anything either=))

Great work lads

Looks like I need to get mine booked in with you at some point.

Got a spare rear beam, that I’m going to get blasted and powder coated at some point over the winter. Then need to get it fitted with new bushes.

wow thats great work.. you lot... just wish i was a bit closer i would have loved to come down to lend a hand.. (with the tea making...) Anytime you short of a hand i try and get down...

I really need my beam bushes done on the 1.9.. too some time... but putting it off as got the 2.8 to sort as well... that method looks like its a lot easier than getting the whole beam off... and can be done in small stages...

Get all the bushes removed before powder coat or beam coating may get damaged by bush removal

Looking forward to being pampered by the Zedshed.
Though I have to admit there's always a worry about what you will find underneath.
Still my handbrake cable definitely needs replacing, so we might as well go the whole hog and do as much as we can, I'll be in contact with Lee regarding details.

On lesson learned yesterday, the GSF handbrake cables have two rubber sleeves which line up with the plastic clips on the car. these are too thick to go in the sleeves and need to be removed, Unfortunately they are glued in place and the glue is stronger than the plastic outer sleeve. They need to be cut off very carefully, I manged to tear the outer sleeve on the first one, necessitating a trip to GSF for anothger one.

Was nice to get our teeth in to a big project again, a few kinks along the way to sort but Mike's Zed came apart so easily - so clean underneath and hardly any corrosion.

Less than impressed with Lee's attempt to set fire to me to see if I was a witch...
