It’s been almost a year since I bought my 2001 Z3 2.2i manual in Titan silver, so thought I had better start a progress thread.
I have been a car enthusiast my whole life and have always been particularly fond of BMW’s. My first car was an inherited 1984 5 series, and there have been several other E36 and E90 cars in the family that I loved. In the mid 1980’s, my father worked for a guy who had an M1 and this pretty much cemented my love of the brand and for M1’s.
In the early 90’s, I saw a disguised Z3 while it was undergoing development testing, which was very exciting for teenage me. A few years later, a friend had a new 2.8 and I remember driving in it once. It seemed so small, but sounded lovely and had a boot big enough for golf clubs. Almost 20 years would pass before I thought about Z3’s again.
My journey to ownership started in autumn 2021, when I realised that you could buy a reasonable Z3 or Z4 for less than £4k, even in winter when there are a LOT less for sale. I had been window shopping for something interesting less than £5k for months, after a family member got a Porsche and got me onto the idea that I should actually have an interesting car of my own before I die.
Then one day I saw this 2.2 Z3 advert and agreed to buy it for £3500 unseen.

Fortunately my wife agreed that it wasn’t a totally stupid idea and that she could also use it to drive to work. With a £100 deposit paid I planned to catch the train to Bristol and drive it home if it was okay. Then the dealer’s family took him away for a surprise 50th birthday weekend and the trip was off for a week. I started to worry about the car’s MOT advisories and the general dirty and rusty state of its engine bay and the contaminated paintwork. Then I realised not all Z3’s were ULEZ exempt. I panicked and pulled my deposit.

More homework and test drives followed. I looked seriously at a few MX5’s and TT’s. None really made an impression. The main issue for me was that I have been very sensible for many years with reliable but boring 4 cylinder family cars. The 4 cylinder engines just did nothing for me.

So with approval in principle, the search continued until I found this facelift Z4 2.5i.

It looked a bit lonely, surrounded by cheap hatchbacks at he dealers yard. I took it for a test drive and fell in love with the engine. It was over my £5k limit, but it had a broken roof, no books and only one key, so I made several cheeky offers, but it was not to be, as the dealer asked for time to sort the roof himself and I got fed up and worried about the work being done on the cheap. I’m sure someone has enjoyed this car in summer 2022!

I looked at a few more cheap Z4’s at dealers…a mistake I think. Most of their roofs didn’t work and some felt terrible to drive.

Then drove a sub £4k 2.2 on a very wet day.

I got soaked as I got in for the test drive. Then as we set off I needed to reverse to let another car pass and realised it needed a new back window that wasn’t totally cloudy. It’s still for sale in February 2023, over a year later and I suspect very well saturated, but the stance on the staggered rims looked great and it sounded amazing.

Then drove a low mileage 2.2 that had been enthusiast owned up in Manchester.

Sounded great, drove nicely, but was very damp inside, the original radio didn’t work and it had a puddle in the boot. I think they were asking almost £8k, so I was never going to buy it.

The following day I saw another one almost the same but less damp that the owner had worked on with his grandfather. It was advertised on Autotrader for just under £5k, but I managed to haggle down to 4.5. The following day I found a link to an advert on Gumtree for the same car for £3950! Doh!

Anyway, much fun has happened since. First job was to remove the 3.0 emblem😀

Shortly after buying my car in February 2022, I found this forum and I am very thankful for the advice I have received here. @Lee very kindly gave me a very accurate condition assessment based on a selection of underbody photos and set my mind at rest after an initial bout of buyer’s regret. Many others have given inspiration to get out and use and enjoy my Z. Then there was the absolute gem @Dakar Z3, who advertised a lovely set of rims and as he was in my area on business, came to my house and fitted them for me. Thanks again John.
I’m also very thankful to live quite close to the Zortopsy room where @spurs fan in a coupe keeps his vast collection of parts from Z’s that have given their lives so that ours may enjoy eternal life.

Within a day of buying my Z, it was pressed into service chasing Porsches around Sussex. I was pleasantly surprised by the noises it could make and how well suited it was to my favourite roads. However, the tramlining was horrendous, and in the wet, I was convinced it was trying to kill me by steering me into a roadside ditch. Also, the alloys didn’t look right. They appeared to be from an E46, and on closer inspection I discovered that the tyres were over 10yrs.
Shopping list:
New tyres
New rims
2.2 badge
BMW club membership
Switch blanks for between seats
Plastic trim pieces for boot
Screw driver for tool kit
Car cover
Wind deflector
Fan belt and an appraisal at local bmw specialist
Lots of Petrol

March 2022, bought a set of staggered 17inch style 78’s from @Dakar Z3. I thought about getting new tyres, but that would have cost between £50 to £100 per corner and I would then be stuck with my naff looking style 45 wheels and skinny tyres. The new wheels with two new and two oldish but unworn tyres was £600, so man maths told me that I was getting new alloys for £200, and I would still be able to sell my usable wheels and tyres for say £100. A year on and the old wheels are still in the shed much to my wife’s disappointment, but vey happy with the new look and the vastly improved handling and not very much tramlining.

Having a detailed look through the car in March/April 2022 and get some advice from @Lee and BMS Surrey in Leatherhead. It apprears my topless model is not as crusty as some of her peers. Unfortunately I don’t have covered parking, so the deterioration will now accelerate. BMS have a check over the car and read codes. All good. They changed the fan belt which is very perished all for £45. No urgent jobs need to be done, but seeing it up on the ramps, I notice some overspray and some evidence of repair to the front left side. The steering wheel is not original and the car has been jacked up on one side on the sill leaving two large dents and on the other side on the “push rod”, bending it up towards the beam bush. I also discover that I m have parts missing in the boot, and that these were part of the spare wheel cage that is also missing. Also, tank straps are in poor condition and have been shimmed with bits of plastic. Beam bushes are life expired and the exhaust has been pushed in by a few cm and part of the exhaust is touching the anti roll bar. That explains the vibration coming into the cabin from the rear, especially with the hood up.
I immediately buy a set of tank straps from another forum legend @Mazza but resolve to just drive the car and not worry about it.

Looks very smart with the new wheels, a bit of chalk and cheese I'd say.

By the end of May I’m 3 months in, loving the new wheels and tyres, making the most of the weather. I’ve driven 2500 miles, which is more than the car’s done in the last 4 years. Also used a litre of top up oil already, which was a bit of a shock. That’s more oil than any of my previous cars have ever used combined, but to be fair, I’ve never driven any of my previous cars so enthusiastically. I’ve also finally figured out how to get the car back on its original registration after agreeing to sell back the private plate to the previous owner for the cost of taking it off. Never realised how complicated it was, especially as there was no other car to transfer it to. Kinda liked the look of the naked front bumper.

Oil top ups are the preserve of the M54, that said, those that have been well driven all year round over their life tend to not suffer with the issue. Italian Tune is clearly the order of the day 👌

I attend a trade show near Stratford Upon Avon, so naturally, I drive up from Surrey via Caffeine & Machine on a lovely day with minimal traffic. The drive up the M40 at a steady 75mph with the top down gives the best tank to tank fuel consumption of 30mpg, dropping to 27mpg after exploring some of the better roads around Burford before heading home.

Very soon after this trip, an intermittent knocking from the rear suspension starts to spoil the driving experience and with her first MOT looming, I start gathering up loose change and make a booking at BMR Performance.
Around this time, the crap looking and very annoying aftermarket head unit unexpectedly stops working, allowing me to fit a slightly better looking one with Bluetooth, although I hardly ever listen to it. The soundtrack of the M54 provides enough entertainment.

I did a few DIY jobs over the summer. Had a go at my headlights with the Turtle Wax kit. I should have stopped after the first stage, but carried on with the sanding pads. No further improvement and lots of small scratches followed. Anyway, the haze has gone.

Another thing I noticed was that I was missing a bit of plastic trim around the bonnet latch. A quick call to @spurs fan in a coupe and a trip to the Zortopsy suite and it was back to stock. My car must have had a repair done at some point, because that part of the engine bay is painted with a gloss finish, whereas the rest of the engine bay is matt.

July 2022: MOT time
Car booked in at BMR Performance for MOT, fitting of tank straps, oil service and investigation of knocking at the rear. I was worried about failing on emissions, but the hours drive to the garage appears to have brought the CAT up to temperature and it passes with advisories related to rear top mounts and beam bushes.

August 2022: return to BMR Performance for replacement of beam bushes and pushrods (the brackets). Even though the rear shocks, top mounts and springs had been changed by previous owner in 2021, the top mounts were toast…maybe because the beam bushes were knackered.

Exactly 1 year of ownership today! Facts and figures after a year:
Start mileage 97,527
Today’s mileage 103,927
6400miles
27 tanks of petrol
Ave consumption 25.5mpg
3 litres of top up oil used
Costs:
Purchase: £4500
Parts, accessories and maintenance: £2337
Insurance and tax: £728
Fuel: £1914
So, the running cost alone has been 80p per mile.
Did I expect to spend over £400 a month running the car? No!
Have I enjoyed it? Yes!
Regrets? None!

Reflecting objectively on the costs of ownership, is it better to pay top dollar up front for a restored car and just enjoy driving it? OR Is it better to buy cheap and get stuck in doing a load of work yourself to keep out of trouble?

I had the option of buying a similar age Porsche Boxter S with a few cosmetic niggles, but with a full suspension refresh for £7k. I passed on it because it was way over my £5k budget, but a year later I’m basically £7k into a Z3.
