Hello, I've always admired these posts but I know 0 about maintaining cars. I'm reliant on garages but I've always planned on learning some maintenance myself.

I've owned the car for about 2.5 years now and would like to give her a freshen up. Its a 110k daily so im not striving for perfection, just solid improvement.

One of the 1st things I did was buy roll hoops from forum member Hoogewerf, he very kindly helped with fitting, we also did the seat bushes at the same time. I do have pictures somewhere.

When I 1st bought the car I had a local garage replace the springs and shocks with oem parts and pretty much all of the front end steering bits, bushes etc and every fliud changed. A major major service?

Anyway my friend Steven said he would help me with the car and show me some basic maintenance (im a complete novice) so I dropped it off at his place and we got to work, here are a few pictures of what we've been up too.

We've also fitted some mazza tank straps, cleaned up and repaired the old exhaust. I really would like a new one but I was quoted rather a lot for a stainless one, i would like quad pipes.

I want to buy a home in South west Scotland so an exhaust can wait a while unless it gets pulled on the next mot

The paint on the calipers turned out quite bright... but once the wheels went on I can deal with it. I may change it at some point, we'll see.

New fuel lines have gone in, I messed up the halo lights so I'm not bothering with them now, the headlights cleaned up very nicely.

I am home from work this weekend so we will hopefully add footwell lighting.

Next I also would like a new rear window or roof but I've read a few horror stories about window fitting so it's putting me off a bit. The roof itself doesn't leak and is in ok condition. I probably should get one of those renovo kits.

The beyern wheels could also do with a refurb. Gold maybe? I always liked the subaru blue and gold combo

I'm aware it's a bit disjointed with the order of pictures etc.

I'm autistic and can struggle with the order of things.

I hope it makes sense to you.
Perfect sense mate, great job

Hello, I replaced my brake light gasket but I'm still leaking into the boot. Any advice on how to repair this please.

The gasket itself seemed about 1cm to large.

Thank you

Shes also now got new handbrake shoes and all the internal bits and back plates. Had to go to a garage for that.

When dealing with the brake discs, either new or tidying up old ones, I like to paint the whole disc in spray-on BBQ paint. I fint silver best as it seems to be thicker than the black and is cheap as chips on ebay.
The first time you use the brakes the paint will come off on the contact areas but stay on the other areas, stops the edge and cooling fins from rusting up. It also works on the callipers and I find it much easier than calliper paint.
Looks so much better for very little effort.

We send our discs away to be be zinc plated. Same kind of idea.

Paul, our E36 is originally from BMW in Sunderland. It must have lived there a lot of its life because it has (had) serious rot before we started restoring her. My wife is also a Mackem.

I can't help with the gasket, but I'm sure someone on here will be able to. Keep up the good work!

Best to take the disc off so you can get to both sides, don't forget to paint the handbrake drum on the rear as these can corrode quite badly.
When reassembling put a sneak of grease on the back of the disc, I use aluminum grease rather than copper grease as I find copper goes claggy and sticky with age, not ideal for a grease.
