The first Dash Cam I ever bought and had on my Z3 packed up a few weeks ago. It wasn't an expensive one, around £60 9 years ago. I bought a Nextbase 412GW for £89.99 from Halfords online store, it would not record sound at all and video was rubbish. I took that into Halfords in Lincoln and they happily exchanged it for one which recorded sound and video - out of sync.
So I've ended up buying the later version of the one I had before. These are very compact and sit right behind the interior rear view mirror and if it were not for the rain sensor you would not see it front the drivers seat, as it is you can just see the bottom edge.
As you can see these are a very compact unit and give very good video and audio recording.
The camera slides into the GPS base which is stuck to the screen with a double sided 3M pad. The later ones have a "rubberised" coating which gives it a more quality feel than the old plastic one. I'll add a eBay link and YouTube clip.
