Hi all,

I am a full time student who enjoys working on my 2002 Z3 when not in uni. The aim is to finish this car before years end 24 and start using it in the spring next year visiting classic car shows and having the top down!.
Its been fun learning basic mechanical skills which are in no way related to my Psychology degree course! The car is not far off now with all the electrics and engine in good working order, wheels, brakes, suspension all refurbed I am moving on to bodywork. Its seems I have the usual sill issues where they meet the wheel arches so will be looking for a local welder this week as it is way out of my comfort zone.

The Z3 has developed a new issue recently which I would like any advice on? when driving there is a strange noise that is similar to when you get something stuck between your brake calliper and heat shield. The sound goes away when accelerating and under load but take your foot of the gas and you hear the scraping noise, slow or fast makes no difference.

If anybody can give me any pointers it would be greatly appreciated...

Hi and welcome, The 2.2i is well suited to the Z3 in my opinion, sounds nice with enough power,I really liked the one I had. Don't recall any other seaweed or algae experts on here, so that's interesting!

My zed used to spend a lot of time outside all weathers. I became quite the expert in nurturing the colonies of algae on my roof.

OP will be able to park his zed outside and then take it into uni as his dissertation

and now the OP has edited his post. It doesn't say "Phycology" anymore and nobody gets the joke. Bah!

But welcome to the forum anyway :) Turning up at uni in a Z3 you'll be dog's doodahs. Students nowadays eh? In my day students couldn't afford a car . . . Mind you, I couldn't afford uni either 🤷‍♂️

Sills off this weekend, Inner fixed sill was not bad just surface rust, cleaned up with grinder and applied rust treatment. Have now painted and looking good. Is there a recommendation for wax oil etc to spray inside the sill?

The outer sills have gone at then ends, maybe a local welder could patch / repair for me as I can't find any replacements for sale??

They're easy enough to weld but, if you don't have the kit to do it yourself, the cost to weld them might exceed the cost of a decent pair from a breaker.

Sounds like contact is being made when some returns to position after moving under torque. Check your engine mounts by giving the engine a good shake, check the fan isn't touching the rad or cowl. If its not doing it on idle with the car stationary then it must be something only affected when the car is moving so drivetrain / wheels etc.

Painted and prepped the inner sill, cleaning up the outer sill tomorrow.

Thanks I will check the engine mounts and fan tomorrow, I've had the wheels off today when I was removing the sills but couldn't see anything obvious. I'm thinking also drive train as there are joints and rubber bits.
