We have recently bought a 2002 2.2 Z3 for my son. It has started showing ABS light and DSC light on dash so took the car to my regular garage who is a VAG specialist and he tried to read the fault codes with at least four different readers and none would connect. Having looked on various forums it seems like this has happened to others. I have read else where on this forum people say the C110 scanner is good so have just bought one off Ebay which has not yet arrived. Is this likely to connect or do people think their is any other problem causing this. Thanks Steve.

Steve, you are better to use the round 20pin socket under the bonnet, the OBDII socket only gives access to one or two modules, this was only really supplied for the US market to monitor the emissions or something like that.

The round 20 pin connector gives you access to all your modules.

Steve,

The z3 2.2, which I also have only works will all the obd fully via the 20pin round connector under the bonnet. I use a c110 with a 20pin connector. You can get a small obd 2 to obd 1 adapter off eBay. Works very well but the c110 takes a little getting used too. I also have a wifi unit that runs software on my iPad / iPhone. To give me codes.

I have reset air bags and a lot more on several Zeds as well as some E36's E39's and now even an E46. It's a learning curve. Feel free to pm me if you need a hand ok.

I have plugged the C110 scanner into the 20 pin socket and got three fault codes 5E24 pressure sensors 5E19 and 5E20 pressure sensor 1 i am guessing they are ABS sensors but not sure which ones and i guess 5E19 will go ounce they are replaced. I cant find the codes on the CD which came with the scanner so any advice would be welcome. Steve.20151021_114517.jpg

  • Steve - the text list below is an extract from ABS 3 hex codes on this link
Read more at http://realitypod.com/2012/06/bmw-c...ist-e36-e46-e90-and-more/#Ml0FVaGhLdRFB35P.99

Unfortunately it does not make it much clearer - if you open the link you have to drill down to near the bottom to find them - there may be others in the long list that I have missed. Sorry not much more help.
  • 5E19 CAN DME/DDE Torque Reduction Not Possible
  • 5E1A CAN DME/DDE Signal Error
  • 5E1E CAN Timeout LWS
  • 5E1F Steering Angle Sensor – not Initialised
  • 5E59 Coding Error
  • 5E5B Switch Pressed Longer than 10s or Faulty
  • 5E5D Brake Fluid Level Switch
  • 5E5E Brake Light Switch
  • 5E20 Pressure Sensor 1 Accident Recognition
  • 5E21 Pressure Sensor 2 Accident Recognition
  • 5E24 Pressure Sensor 1/2 not Plausible
  • 5E26 Sensor Power Supply

Steve, don't know much about your reader but it should not see messages about DSC, your car IIRC has ASC?

Do you have options on that reader to select the type of car etc?

Have you tried to clear the codes to see if they come back yet ? You might need to try to clear them a couple of times. Just a thought.

After doing the scan i thought i would check the relevant fuses so took each out to check if ok which they were but when i started car back up warning lights were out so took the car for a test drive and the ABS and traction control all seemed to be working fine so now hoping it stays ok. I am a bit concerned it might be the ABS pump at fault and have found a firm called ECU testing.com who will test and rebuild the unit on the car for £165 + vat but don"t want to go that route before checking the cheaper parts first. My son is using the car today so should soon find out if lights came back on.

My light kept coming on nearly every trip out and was slowly getting worse (more often) and if you leave the car for a week it would turn over slowly, the battery had over 12v and charged ok but after changing the battery its only been If I drive down a gravel road like when we visit a national trust place on the way out our light comes on for a bit for some strange reason :)

Just an update on the warning lights on dash. Since i removed each of the relevant fuses for the ABS and traction control all has been good. My son has done some long drives including down to Brands Hatch and all has worked fine so i am not sure if one of the fuses was not making a good connection or son had been pushing the traction switch when trying to put the seat heaters on and caused it.

Steve I had the same probs with mine a couple of years ago, had it checked and told to fit R/OS wheel senser, changed it but wasn't that then fault for n/s front wheel senser again changed it, then ABS pump fault so got onto ECU testing and they said it sounds like the soldering in the the pump was breaking down and they said they would test it and let me know, which they did and confirmed it was the soldering breaking down, had it done for a few pounds less than you've been quoted, got it back in just over a week with a lifetime guarantee, never been more happy with it.In the beginning the car did show faults for over two years on and off and it came on during MOT and failed so that's why I had it repaired, if you contact them with the fault codes and the frequency of them they may be able to judge weather it's worth doing, I sent mine and asked for same one back and marked it to make sure it was my original. They only charge for testing if it's ok. If it is the pump my guess is it'll keep coming back, buy the way BMW quoted a 4 figure number for a new pump. Rha,Roy.

@Dobbo had the same problem on his Z albeit a 1.9. he fitted a 2nd hand pump at my place and it cured the problem.

Let's hope he don't get probs with it Tony, because it's used there's no telling when it'll play up cos the're prone to this problem when they start ageing, If he didn't pay much for it then good luck to him, hope it lasts. Roy.:)

Touch wood it has not happened since but will take it off and have it tested if it happens again. Other than that the car runs great and has been well cared for through out its life.

Nice to see you on here Steve Johnson, shame it's for a fault though, enjoyed our little chat at the Kopp Hill Climb maybe we can persuade you to attend some more events next year, yes? Get your son along too. Rha, Roy.
