Here's my step by step guide to fitting BMW Z3 parking brake cables. You can see in the pictures that both of the outer sheathes of the cables had completely split in half.

Whilst this isn't a reason to fail the M.O.T. it is sensible to change them as water ingress can cause them to fail.

My thanks also; may I add a couple of tips?
Tto remove the old cable at the hub is not easy; the access on the cable side is very limited for mole grips: just drift it out from the drum side using a 1/4 inch extension bar which passes neatly through a wheel stud hole and lines up with the cable nipple which can be drifted back out using an 8mm socket extension as shock interface.
My new cable nipple was a tad too wide; far easier to simply grind a few thou off each side so that it goes into the hub, rather than enlarge the hole.

I have to agree, but not every one has or has access to a bench grinder, however most people have a cordless drill/driver these days.

Tony.
