Hi Y'all,

Just implemented a few performance improvements on the server so will be interested to hear any feedback, positive or negative on how things are running.

Cheers, Gary

Is it the usual, CAI, lowered and stainless exhaust, you will probably have to remap it to get the best out of it:whistle:

I was going to make just that joke but thought I would see how came along with it first.... Here is some nerdy stuff for those who may be interested what James and I get up to...

Today we switched the web server system from Apache to Nginx (pronounced engine-x) which is quicker and faster. You should be able to see a difference in the site is depending on your computer/internet connection.

Next on the list is the installation of the enhanced search system, which will give you all greater flexibility when using the site search - and should yield better results too. I have the money set aside, just need to buy it and install it.

We are looking at changing from the current MySQL database system over to MariaDB, which is quicker and generally better. In the near future we may implement a CDN (Content Delivery Network) to host a copy of the site in the US as well as the UK. This means that the data doesn't have as far to travel, so the performance over the other side of the pond should be on a par with the UK.

Are you really still reading all this? Just checking.

Most likely will need to add some more memory to the server as well. Couple of other things planned, but that's it for the foreseeable future, and I can start working through some other items on my list such as a better setup for regional groups...

All looks great fun although I bet you were apprehensive about the cutover today. A job well done by the looks of it.
It's all moved on a pace since I was playing with LAMP servers a few years ago.

Do we need typing lessons, so that we can type quicker, to keep apace with the upgrades? ;)

I was brought up in days before MS DOS, then evolved to Windows and followed that train. Need to learn more about Linux but can make my way around as and when needed. The beauty is that they just don't go wrong like Windows servers!

That's why I like apple products, I have never seen a blue screen of death in 8 years of ownership, never had to go a forced reboot, speaks for itself I think...

Had a couple of freezes with my Mac but not the almost daily problems I get with my work windows machine. Windows server is a little more robust but then they're generally not running a user gui most of the time. I started coding machine code on a £1m development environment for mission critical systems some of which had less than a target down time of less than 20 seconds a year. Now it's a raspberry Pi!!!
