I think I may have stopped that smell.
Checked fuel cap rubber
Found cracks in fuel pot . And bought new from Bmw
Attached string to plastic down pipe and un- clipped from tank , under car.
Pulled rubber surround out of tank filler hole until I could get to down pipe clip.
Undid clip and attached new fuel pot
Pushed rubber back in and pulled down pipe back with string
Re clipped to tank.
Be careful not to lose the path of the drain pipe and it's no good taking the wheel arches out.
