I was thinking of plumbing in some air from the M Style front bumper I have into the airbox but after watching this I think I will give it a miss. Can you really get better gains from increasing the air flow?

This is really good Australian humor on a serious subject. I hope you enjoy :)

It all depends what you are looking for. The standard air box on the Z3 is restrictive and fogging the air box does make a difference to it, and it's a well used modification. Not in terms of producing more power, but it does allow the engine to rev better. Will be doing on mine as soon as I can afford to sort the exhaust at the same time.

I haven't watched the video above, because I've seen similar ones before.

Not sure if you have read this article or not before... https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z3-a-better-air-intake-by-mike-fishwick.43/

The first reason they don't work is because of the fan shape, they need to be shaped to compress the air to increase volume and not just flow it faster and the second reason it would not work is because of the electrical power required to drive the compressor at the RPM to make an actual difference would be more than a standard car battery would provide. Overcome those two things and an electric turbo would work.

When your trunking / plumbing/fogging air into the filter area your not trying to force air into the filter, you have turbos and blowers to do that, the idea is to get some cooler air available (that's already there and free) to the filter which if gets as far as the cylinders will give you a better detonation hence a probable gain in MPG after suitable AIR FLOW MODS, as for the electric turbo, well don't discard the idea entirely they are feasible and the motor industry is looking at it seriously but have too many irons in the fire as regards the exhaust turbo, but it will come when development permits and the existing partnerships sour and get too expensive. If they can run a vehicle on batts then you can bet your bottom dollar the electrical power in not the problem. Like all industries when you invest heavily in something your less likely to change in a hurry, more likely to buy up the patent rights and shelve them till your good and ready. Take the ever lasting light bulb for instance, believed to have been invented in the 50s and you still can't buy one, same argument with solar power, you'll have it when THEY are good and ready. My belief anyway. Come on what do you think. Rha, Roy.:wtf:

Yep, fully agree Roy. The mega giant automotive and oil companies have for years bought out "good" ideas to prevent competition at the wrong time. F1 is normally a good producer of good ideas (no doubt they have an electric turbo in the bag already). But as you say, when they're ready, we'll get it.

Thanks Andy, thought I might have become a pessimist, in my last employment I was summoned to the boss's office to explain my continuos moaning, I told him " I'm not moaning I'm just stating facts" so he advised me to put them all in writing, anyway that was 5yrs ago, been retired for 2.5yrs and still waiting for his reply.:banghead: =)) Roy.
