Hello how are you all?

The hoses on my 97 2.8 are goosed, the 2 pipes at the top of the steering rack. I bought a 1.9 rack thinking they would be the same, they're not.

Can I have the entire 1.9 rack fitted to the 2.8?
Is it just a bolt off bolt on job? Or will I need different control arms etc?

Thx for your help.

Hi Andy, he only does the return pipe I'm afraid. There's 2 small pipes affixed to the power steering unit itself that have failed. I bought the excellent condition 1.9 rack thinking I could just take them off and put them in the 2.8 but the fitments are different.
I'll try to find a diagram.

Unusual for those to leak. Have you cleaned it all off to check it’s definitely where the leak is from? Sorry if that’s a silly question.

Tony.

Yes Tony, they're now both removed from the 2.8 rack. Quite rusted.

Can I just do a straight swap with the 1.9 rack?
I might just be imagining things, but I seem to remember reading something on here about the 1.9’s rack being a ‘quicker’ one, and it therefore being fitted to the M?

Someone such as @Lee could no doubt tell you if I’m talking cobblers and, more importantly, if it would be a straight swap onto your 2.8

It’s the 1.9 gear linkage that’s the ‘quick’ one. All Z3 steering racks are the same..but they are a desirable upgrade to non Z BMWs as they are the quickest (fewest turns lock to lock).means the prices are always quite high

Sorry Paul, I have no idea regarding compatability.

Tony.

The part number on the 1.9 and 2.8 refers to something different. That’s the part number for the M PS pipes only
