Hi Frankie

The 3 series roof is more complicated as there is a cover for the roof when it is down so that the rear of the car is smooth. The switches in this can fail or get out of sync. The roof has to open slightly then the cover raises then the roof will fold down and then the cover lowers so it sounds as if the cover won't raise initially and so the roof won't continue to lower. Can be fixed but not sure how or the cost.
Have a search for E36 cabrio roof faults

Most likely in the micro switches Frankie. Don't see it being too major of a repair if the reserve price is low enough to make up for the cost. Should. Be something you can handle. JIM

If the cost of the car reflects some repairs may be needed and you like the car go for it Frankie. You obviously know enough about cars to sort this problem I reckon. Off to bed, been up 22 hrs. Night mate. Tony.
