Hi experts,

I am admitting defeat with this one - BMW want £1,000 just for a headlight to apparently get it through its MOT.

The timing is terrible, having just (well, last year) spent a couple of grand on getting an official BMW Cat fitted, so I am throwing in the towel.

Can anyone suggest what a fair price to ask for it is?

Located Near Barnsley

I have tried to keep stuff going - Aircon fixed and blows nice and cold - Leaks tended to, etc. but an "unenthusiastic" partner and age have won the battle.

It is Slate grey with a red roof - There is some form of "wear" on the bonnet paintwork and the roof, thought watertight needs brightning up. 128K miles.

Look forward to comments (if they are helpful ;-)

Thanks!

Pictures to follw when I get my phone working...

Best avoid the dealers, ask our resident breakers if they have a headlamp, going to be a lot cheaper going that route. Top of car looks smart hope the underside is as good.
As to price, take a look at the cars listed on ebay and see what models like yours are achieving, loads out there its that time of year.

Thanks, Colb - I tried that too :(- I fitted a replacement from our friends eBay, but BMW said that had exactly the same problem.

Of course the problem with listing it at the moment is that it has no MOT :(

Thanks again.:beer

Apparently it cannot be adjusted to get the beam to the right point necessary to pass the MOT ... Too technical for me - I was proud that I could fit the replacement in the right place and that only required 4 bolts and a couple of leccy connectors. :p

I have the original in the boot and the one that I fitted still connected.

That sounds very suspect to me even if your adjusters were broken it seems a bit of a coinsidence the replacement is the same. Take it out and have a good look at the adjusters, lubricate them and turn them forward and back to see if they are indeed functioning.
When satisfied they are free to adjust put it back in and use a wall or garage door to adjust the beams. Shame your not close to one of the Zedsheds, nearest to you must be Lincoln with @t-tony

Compact, Z3

Carry out headlight adjustment at adjusting screws (1) and (2).

A definite allocation of adjusting screws is not possible.

1. Adjusting screw for height adjustment

2. Adjusting screw for side adjustment

Note:
The illustration shows the adjusting screws on a headlight that has been removed.

I agree with @colb. This seems seriously suspicious to me that a replacement headlight would be broken in the same very way… Also, have you tried to do your MOT at a garage where people will be more inclined to help fixing the issue? I have a local MOT testers nearby who are more than happy to help with any failures...

I try to keep my cars as standard as possible, but this pair of headlights seem to be quite good value for the money (and an improvement to the original lights): BMW Z3 1996-2002 Chrome Angel Eye Headlights.

At £299.00 for the pair, they are certainly a bargain when compared to what BMW wants to charge for a single headlight...

Check that the spindle on the levelling motor is engaged in the back of reflector correctly. The spindle can also be adjusted to correct the angle of the reflector.

Try a different garage for the mot. If it passed last year, there’s no reason for it to fail this year on headlights

It would be great if it could go to an enthusiast- Are you close enough to come and have a look “on spec”?
I’m Lincoln way but could pop over next week

I'm in Sheffield and have a headlight.

Getting the adjusters going isn't too tragic.
