Just after something non-dating for the 2011 E89 I've just bought - happy to consider anything if it saves me shelling out £250 to the DVLA

DVLA is the cheapest source of unreleased plates. If you find a plate on a site, you should always check DVLA, just in case it's an unreleased number.

CH60ERS is £896 on Plates4less
CH60ERS is £799 on DVLA

The only thing is if you're buying from DVLA or a company then you have to pay VAT too.

With DVLA the transfer fee is usually included though

I paid £99 + VAT + £80 DVLA transfer fee for each of WNZ3005 for my Z300S and G15TFS for my Targa Florio Special from speedyreg.co.uk.

You might find one where the numbers after the Z4 could mean something to you or your car.

I don't know why they show two prices for each plate. All inclusive of what?

Maybe. £80 fee to transfer to a car and 30 odd quid for plates. Makes sense although the maths doesn't work the same on all the plates in the screenshot I posted.

It is actually plus VAT on the plate AND the transfer fee. The transfer fee is £80 (from the DVLA inclusive), these companies are charging VAT on the DVLA price. Not sure that is kosha?

The 'cheap' plates from the DVLA are £250 inclusive of any tax and transfer fees. It is hard to find cheaper anywhere else, as the advertised prices are exclusive of all tax.

It is also worth remembering that all these companies 'selling' reg numbers are just brokers. They don't 'own' any of the plates they advertise. The vast majority of reg numbers, apart from a few owned by private individuals which are on retention, are owned by the DVLA. So these companues are basically brokers for the DVLA, as it is not worth the DVLA's while to sell the millions of retained plates for a few quid to all and sundry.

There are a few plates being advertised for £35. Those will be released to them for FREE by the DVLA, the £35 is their minimum profit plus VAT.

I would like to own JJJ 656K, as it was the reg on my favourite childhood car ( a 1972 Toyota Celica RA22). That plate will be on the DVLA system somewhere, as numbers are not just deleted if they were ever issued.

If you find a plate you like check the DVLA site, it will be cheaper. These companies will do just that if you want to purchase and add on a bit they are only showing plate available from DVLA.

Something else to mention is that private reg companies cross advertise, some of the plates that they are advertising are actually being sold by a different site, they have added an extra fee if you buy through them. They will then buy the plate from the site that is actually advertising it for the owner and sell it to you for the inevitable higher price.

That would be a good registration on one of those 2 stroke powered 3 wheelers mini pick ups the Italian make, it's called an Ape is it not? I would imagine they have their own forum or two.
Brilliant, might they be a bit too old to carry a T reg though :( I'll do some research though, thanks Ken!
