Hi.. l note that my 2007 e86 has an aux input for srereo under the dash. I have seen some usb to aux adaptors on ebay but it says that your car stereo must have the following:

1. please make sure your device have the mp3 decode function, that can read the mp3 file from U-disk
2.You must ensure that your car was equipped with aux interface and supports aux decoding or It won't work

Does anyone know if this will work?

What are you trying to achieve, all that does is convert from a 3.5mm headphone jack to a USB socket. Almost all phones have a 3.5mm jack, so not sure what advantage that adapter gives you.

I think I get what your trying to do. Over on the Z4 forum a guy has done a how to guide changing that input for a usb port that interfaces with the car.

The oem business head unit in my new E86 plays mp3 CDs and l have burnt a couple to keep me going.. but it would be useful if l could also plug in my large collection on the usb.. its not the end of the world if l cant but might take a punt on one of these fow a couple o quid if theres a chance it may work? I dont store music on my phone as the storage is always full up with photos and videos

Trying to understand what you're attempting to do. You have a USB stick with music files on. You want to plug that into a device that converts those files to play out the audio via the 3.5mm jack in the car. Yes?

Anything that you plug your USB stick into had to be able to read the file format on the drive, extract audio files and decode them into audio and present that on the 3.5mm audio jack.
That essentially is what is happening inside you old head unit.
The 3.5mm jack is a dumb device. You can't control anything using the car audio controls. The device you plug in has to be able to read the USB stick, tell you what's on it and then read and convert the file. You might as well buy a cheap MP3 player and use that instead of your USB stick.

I agree Ian and that's exactly what I use (A SanDisk clip player) however if you use a memory source, either the hard drive in the player or a card, much bigger than 1gb. you will hardly ever hear all the files unless you never switch it off. I don't know a technical reason why but it is a fact.

This is mine.

I might have a bit more than that
Got 35GBytes of music on the network drive. About half of that on my phone. The rest is the kids stuff.
I probably listen to 50-60% of what's on my phone/iPod over a period of several years. In the car for up to a couple of hours a day so plenty of time.

What I'm saying is it's as though it developes a "memory" and it recycles some of the content rather than playing it straight through to the end and starting again at the beginning if that makes sense.
