Evening folks! I’d like to get the rear screen replaced. Is there anybody in the south of England that can do this?

Is it better to buy an original BMW screen? Where’s the best place in the UK?

There are seveal options for a new screen online but a BMW one although expensive is likely to fit. A simple DIY job, I did mine about 10 years ago.

Hi mate, really was it that easy? I hear stories of people struggling on their own, and roofs that have shrunk, causing screen replacement nightmare? Where’s the best place to find a quality screen?

I found it was best to have a helper, they hold the windows while you try and put the zip together. It is more awkward than difficult.

My Z3 is around 25 years old. Around 10 years ago I got a back screen from a seller in germany on that well know auction site. It was about 80 quid if I remember rightly. Came with the zip clasp thing and old one came out and new one in in less than an hour. Has been perfect for the last 10 years.

But (there's often a 'but') just a few weeks ago I found some of the original 25 year old stitching was starting to break. Tried re-stitching but the more I fiddled the worse it got.

So, I would say, if your car is as old as mine then you might find some of the stitching is rotten so won't take the new window well. My car has been outside for many of those 25 years. Daily driver all year round so maybe sun and weather hasn't been kind to it.

But just wanted to have said that a whole new roof, fitted, isn't that expensive.

Thanks for your reply! I used to have a Z3 15 years ago. And Always love them. So I took the plunge and bought another one. It’s a great car, only the 2.0L but it’s the 6cyl and that’s all that matters.
I had a problem with the rear plastic drone that was cracking, bud stupidly I just pulled it out, as it didn’t look very nice, and previous owner used some silicone around a couple of edges!
The screen itself isn’t that bad at all, it’s really the frame that’s missing doesn’t look great…
