rear view mirror

well folks, another small problem ;-)
I was cleaning my windscreen the other day and I hit off the rear view mirror which in turn decided to fall off I have tried a glue but it didn't work, has anyone tried any glues, and which works?
also, there are cables going to the mirror, what are they? I presume self dimming or something... thank you all kindly ;-)

Wires are for the alarm remote receiver. Loctite do a specific adhesive, find it at Halfords.

ahh right, alarm is immobilised and using a Clifford, I used that glue already and it didn't work as the mirror is too heavy, I picked up an epoxy today so hopefully that will work, if it does not then I will use a suction mirror, also sold in Halfords thanks for the reply Z

When using the loctite mirror adhesive, 1, Make sure the screen is scrupulously clean,dry and warm. 2, separate the mirror from the mounting block if possible and glue it to the screen and leave for 24hrs. 3, If you can't separate the mirror from the mount, when you have the mirror in place support it with tape till the glue is set.

couldn't separate it due to the wires Tony, did try... maybe some gaffing tape might hold it while it sets. seriously thinking of using tec 7, I used it on my door handle and its brill will try this other stuff tomorrow and see how we get on, also have to replace the thermostat and will do an oil and filter change while I am at it

A new windscreen is about £140 fitted, been quoted this for when I get the repainting done soon, as having the screen out to do it.

Loctite do a windscreen mirror bond kit that has a fine mesh substrate that is sandwiched between the mirror and glass, the glue itself is more like a superglue but I have used it on a previous car and you could swing on the mirror once bonded it was that strong.

Had the same problem recently, nudged the mirror whilst cleaning and it fell off.

Prised the trim cover off and unclipped the wiring to stop it just dangling around.

Can't remember the name of the product but the same as Aceman describes, superglue tube and a bit of mesh.

I cleaned the old glue off carefully with a razor blade and cleaned with brake cleaner.

Then took the base off the mirror by twisting through 90 degrees, being careful to mark where 'up' was invade it mattered.

Then cut the mesh to the right shape and glued the mirror base mount to the windscreen and left for a few days.

Clipped the wires back on, trim panel in place, lined the up position and twisted the mirror back on.

Problem Solved and central locking back, I missed that!

yea guys, that's the very one I used.... I held it for like 5 mins and the bloddy thing still fell off, and so did my arm lol
I think maybe it was too warm outside... I took the whole mirror apart, the ball out of its socket, the glass out, everything to try and see if I could separate the back from the front so to speak but no, the wires are holding it all together and they in turn are soldered on to the PCB so even if I took the board out I couldn't part them.... so te only way is to cut the wires not something I want to do but hey, needs must and all that....

You can buy double sided tape specifically designed to stick mirrors on to glass in cars.

The advantage is, it sticks immediately and as long as the screen/mirror base is clean, will never fall off.

In fact after sticking the mirror on my Lotus with the product, l had a hell of a job removing it when l decided to fit a smaller mirror.

Just remember the golden rule when sticking anything to anything, clean,dry and warm, regardless of what type of adhesive you are using.

was looking for something like that Lightning but didn't find it, used the new stuff and to say it was useless would be an understatement...
so the mirror is sitting in the passenger foot well till I find something that works :-/

We used to use the Loctite stuff on Chrysler and Talbot cars and in the winter months it was only really any good if we parked the vehicle in the workshop with the workshop heater blowing onto the screen before sticking the base on. I know you will persevere Dave. Good luck mate.
