Hi can someone throw some light on my dilemma please, on investigation i found
my 1997 1.9 Z3 to be missing the parts 2 and 3 listed here :
http://www.estore-central.com/bmw-p...e-Electrical-System/Remote-Control-Version-1/
and yet i have central locking via the key. So my question is, is this part listed as 3 here :
http://www.estore-central.com/bmw-p...al-System/Ews-Control-Unit-Tr-Module-Support/
anything to do with the remote locking system and if so were would i find it? and do think replacing just the remote module i would be able to get the remote fobs working again or would it better if i looked at installing an aftermarket remote central locking module?

your thoughts will be very much appreciated

All I know is that the remote locking system resides behind the glovebox. It plugs into a harness that is suppose to be there waiting if the car is set up for it.
I dont know how to use the BMW system, I used an aftermarket system and just added it in. It has a separate key fob to actuate the alarm and in turn doors.
Any competent alarm shop should be able to integrate it easily if the door locks have actuators built in like mine did. To verify, I would lock the car and one door at a time verify that the door locks and unlocks when the opposite door locks and unlocks.

Ok which aftermarket system did you go for, i also think this might be best as i don't really want the alarm to work

Dave - do you have the `housebrick' style remote or key integrated?
On the early models the alarm systems were not all factory fitted but installed by dealer after shipment to UK.
There are some photos in this article of control unit fitted to my '98 at delivery. https://zroadster.org/articles/3g-ews-remote-fob-programming.24/
Please note there is a plug in unit on the main box and there are 2 different part numbers both in 82 group. I recall that it gets confusing that if you search for these in real.oem they are listed against the M but not other Zed models.

I have a very inexpensive Crime Guard unit, something like this.
http://www.caralarm.com/MyCart/ProductDetails/2836/350i5.aspx
Then I searched ebay and found the pigtail that plugs into the car. I married the 2 together and vuala, instant alarm.
An alternative is to find one of these;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Z3-2-3-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item338a912709&vxp=mtr
That's the OEM alarm and this is what a the car came with when the owner selected it.
The alarm uses coded chips that are matched and go in the alarm box and they key with the alarm button. If you have the matching set then you can make the key work with the alarm.

How does one find out what system they have and get replacement remotes. My car only came with a single key that must set something when the key is removed as I get noises chiming? When I do it? JIM

Jim,
First you need to check whether you actually have an OEM one fitted - early UK models may not have.
Easy check is do you have a siren installed in the engine compartment? If yes, have a look behind glove box as to what control box is installed - see photos in the link I posted above.
