Remote locking...........................

Hi all.................
First post on the site ,
hope maybe i can get a bit of advise...
Just bought a Z3 1.9 1998 for the wife and she (and i ) loves it to bits but we only recieved 1x key
from the previous owner,blank key with no remote buttons,where and how can i get a remote assuming
the car has remote looking fitted.
There is a red LED in the dashboard centre panel near the digital clock and a BMW sticker saying "BMW ALARM"
The LED never flashes as i have to central lock the car with the key in the drivers door lock. (guess the alarm isnt
being "armed" when doing it this way.
Any ideas?

You should have a remote with the car
You can only arm the car with a remote
The flashing led if pressed immobilises the alarm censors in the car, when having the top down
but the immobiliser still works

What does your key look like? This is what I had with my 99' Z3

There is another type from the earlier cars which had a seperate alarm module on the keyring, but I don't have a picture of that.

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, I don't know what kind of keys came with a 1998 Z?
My car is from October 1996 and has the 'brick type' remote which is a pretty bulky piece of kit.
As my battery went flat a couple of years ago during the winter, after recharging, my alarm would not recognize my remotes, this means taking the glove box to bits to get to the alarm module and reset it.

Being a rather lazy person this job has never been attempted and to be honest, I have got used to and quite like opening the car with the keys, as you don't get the chirping and the flashing lights. Used to annoy some neighbors early in the morning as it was quite loud. :ymblushing:

Obviously I realize that the alarm is not working, but if it is going to get stolen, it will get stolen either way.

Edit...looks like you should have the same key as in the pic Gaz posted.

Hi Mike,

A big warm welcome to the forum. I think you will have the following alarm system on your zed http://zroadster.org/wiki/bmw-z3/guides ... ser-guide/

The key fob will be the upper right hand shape of the 3 shown in the arming through remote control section.

This was the alarm system used during that time and is what is fitted to mine. I also had the same systems on various 3 series (e36) of similar age. Your key will probably have the BMW roundel on it and possibly a touch built in when you press the logo.

I hope that helps a little. I'm not too sure where to get replacement remotes but am sure you can get them as I was asked last year if I had a spare by an indie in Lincoln.

Check ebay for remotes !

Any working remote can be programmed to the car as it is the car that needs syncing with the remote not the other way around. I did exactly this as I only got one remote with mine and after doing the programming routine by flicking the switch over on the alarm module I had 2 working remotes.

The actual key however you will have to get from your local BMW dealer as these have an immobiliser chip embedded in the key and will need programming to match the car, should be around 40 quid or so for a plain key or a little more for one with a built in light.
