I realised one of my door mirrors had seized, I had a look around internet for possible repair solutions. Some replaced the mirror support with a fibre glass replacement. Some drilled out the base spindle and used a bolt. But I came up with this solution. The main issue seemed to be how to separate the mirror from the base once the spring and spindle had been removed. I used a dremel with a cutting disc and cut a slot in the base and mirror support as below. Using a screw driver as a wedge, open up the gap and the seized components can be parted. Cleaned up all the parts and rebuilt the door mirror using a new 13mm starlock washer.

Completed door mirror re-assembled and greased.

Hence door mirror repaired for cost of one starlock washer.

I did, removed all traces of old paint, applied acid etch primer first coat, then primer, then colour, then lacquer.
Cool nice work
Was it expensive to do?

Thank you, I've been trying to separate my base from the stock for months now. I finally have it to the stage where I can attempt your solution and then find a replacement tube, spring keeper and a star washer. Anything I've missed?? JIM

You haven't missed anything, I cleaned all the parts and lightly sprayed with acid etch paint, applied a little grease. Then rebuilt.

Thanks for the pics, one more seperation to make which is what you have done and I can get this put together if I can get the tube and retainer with star washer off eBay. It's important to me because it is the last piece Ashbandicoot donated to me prior to his passing so I really want to use it!! You've now made it possible!! JIM

PS or anyone have these parts laying around which I could buy?? JIM

Brilliant! I've been trying to progress past the seized stage for ages!

The people who sell the fibreglass replacement will sell you the spring, bolt, starloc washer & new mounting bolts separately. Just email and ask. The guy's name is Udo. http://www.spiegel-z3.de/index.html.

When I enquired a few months ago the price list was:

Complete replacement assembly with painted base 110€
Base painted/unpainted 41,90€/21,90€
Sleeve and starlock fixing 4,90€
Spring (stainless steel) 3,50€
Base to door securing screws M5 0,65€
Shipping to UK 16€

thanks for that info @mrscalex I'll give that a try. But I still can't seperate the base and the stalk! But now that I see how it goes together and there is a stub on the base I'll try the dremel cut and see if that helps! JIM
