I'll take a look.

I'm just doing a bit of fault finding as the project is a little lumpy when she's hot so I'm wondering if I've got a partially blocked injector or an air leak somewhere. It seems to "rumble" a bit then tick over normally.

As you've seen from my other thread the HG is good so due could be lacking in an injector or a plug could be breaking down.

You've had it stripped for the manifold change the inlet boots are prone to deterioration over time but i would have thought you would of found this but unmetered air would cause lumpy but i imagine at cold as well as hot.

Yeah it's a little at cold too actually - should have mentioned that I'll have a good look later. It's snowing here so it's a good way to spend the day.

Sounds like it could be the Idle Control Valve or around that area vacuum leak. Did you thoroughly clean it cos if it sticks just slightly it causes idle problems. Hope this helps.

Thanks Roy, you may well be right. What is the best way to clean the valve?

Hi Simon, you'll have to take it off to clean it, I used some carb cleaner, not cheap but can be used to get rid of oil and carbon deposits on other jobs. That valve needs to be so clean you can hear it open and close with a clunk when you shake it from side to side which is how it operates with vacuum pulling it open/closed when no accelerator is used/tickover. ( hold the main barrel in your hand with the two openings facing left and right, flick your wrist L and R to see how free it is) Took most of my can of carb cleaner and a good few minutes before mine was free and easy. My tickover wasn't bad but got a lot smoother after this clean, reackon it must/should be part of a BMW service at some interval or other. Other thing to check is does the throttle fully close, too tight a cable could keep it open fractionally which would upset the tickover. If all that fails I would look for a vacuum leak.
Plugs and injectors will give you a fault code on your reader as should the ICV but ICV is known to stick slightly without showing fault code. Hope all this helps. Good luck, looking forward to meeting you to discuss the swap.

Roy.

Thanks Roy - that's very kind of you to go into so much depth.

I'm happy to PM you my number if you'd like to discuss the swap.

Hope to see you at one of our meets Simon and we'll have plenty to talk about, don't want to spoil it if we've already talked on the phone, if you get my drift.;)
Roy.

Ps, just post up anything I can help you with in the mean time.
