Roof malfunction

Hi!

Just having a problem with the functionality of the roof on z4 and wondering if anyone has come across this before. When I click the button to put the roof down, the windows go down but it stops there. The light flashes red on the button but no error shows on the dash or computer system. Also no whirring sound from motor etc. Fuse and motors etc have been checked and garage were perplexed to the cause.

Has anyone else got any experience of this problem or know what the potential cause could be and how I go about getting this resolved?

Any help/advice appreciated!

Just a quick thoight, have you moved the two handles in the boot which extend the boot space? If they aren't in the correct position the roof won't work.

Yeah we have tried that, unfortunately. Thanks for trying!
The garage has looked into it and couldn't understand it so will be taking it in again for more time. Just thought maybe someone else may have had the same problem and could get to the bottom of it! Always worth a go

You say the motor was checked, any ideas what they did to check it? The motors are prone to water damage in the drainage channels aren't kept clear. Ends up submerging and killing the motor frustratingly.

I have no idea what they looked at but I will definitely check into that. The roof hadn't been opened all winter so I suppose that's very possible. Thanks for your help

Hi Jemma, has the roof not been opened at all through the winter?. Did it try to open when you first tried it, or not at all?

Tony.

ps. Has the car had a remote opening system (such as Gap-tech) fitted, do you know?

Hi Tony. Not at all actually. Probably a couple of months minimum. No it didn't move at all. No sounds, no visible effort. Just silence and stillness!
I don't believe it has had a remote operating system fitted but couldn't be sure!

From what I have read on forums etc. when the roof motor gives up it usually gives up after starting to move. Hopefully your garage will find a not too costly reason for this. Would be good to hear how it goes as a Z4 owner myself. Good luck with it. If I find any more info I'll let you have it.

Tony.

sounds like the roof motor has packed up. If it was the shelf position then the windows would not go down, ,
As It is being allowed to start the process by opening the windows, then everything is in the right position, but when the roof should move, it doesnt, which points to the motor. do the front locks above the winscreen unlock also?
I had to change mine with the very same symptoms. A motor is around about £300 but the roof has to come out to change it,

The windscreen doesn't unlock; the windows open and then after holding the button down for a few further seconds of nothing happening it flashes red

I think the screen locks could be key to this. I had my roof not open a couple of times up to last Friday. The motors unlocked and the roof started to lift, then stopped. I got the roof down and applied some spray grease to the screen locks and catches and, touch wood, it's been ok since.

How did you get the roof down in the first place, Tony? I assume you need it down to apply the spray grease. Doing it manually is quite a task I have heard?? Thanks so much for all your help

Well to be honest my roof was unlocking and starting to lift before stopping. I'll look into open manually and see what I can find out.

There's a couple of YouTube videos etc. just not quite brave enough - worried I'll cause more damage! A few people have said on forums that it's a nightmare to do. But at least we can look into screen locks etc. Or get the garage to...

You'll definitely want the top down as the weather gets better!! Good luck! That's why I like my 97 no lock motors no top motor all manual, little to go wrong!! JIM
