I have to do some heavy duty loom repairs. I've done tons of soldering over 25 years with the Scalextric cars I restore so I'm not worried about the job itself.

But the soldering iron I use for that and PCB repairs is not suitable for the car. It's not beefy enough.

Can anyone recommend a good quality piece of kit? Or at least tell me what size (watt) I should be aiming for?

Also any recommendations for solder itself? Specific make or spec?

Thanks.

I use a butane iron Rob. It's a Portasol Superpro model. Any decent quality cored solder will suffice.

Tony.

Only thing is be careful where you set it down when got. Beauty of it you can work anywhere and don't need cables. Always keep a spare has refill though.

Tony.

Mines a gas 4 in one solder iron mini blow torch great thing .
Like Tony says you have to watch the angle you sit / use them in as they have an exhaust port which ejects a fair amount of heat

I am a big fan of the gas soldering irons. I have had 3 in my lifetime great bits of kit. They should be plenty good enough to solder the majority of threaded cables

I have a gas one. Exhaust STUPIDLY points the same direction as the stand. Found this out with the burn Mark on the coffee table :banghead::bag:
