Spare Key Suggestions

I have only just discovered the second key supplied for the car isn't infact for my car! Quick call to dealer confirmed he was surprised to hear this..........hmmmm

So,

can anyone tell me the price I am looking at for getting a bespoke key for the car and did you have to go through BMW.

Also, do any of you go for lost key insurance at all?

any car post 1997 has a chip in the actual key aswell as the normal central locking. From BMW its £160, there are others but they needed the key to send away which meant i'd have no car key. BMW will sometimes cut by VIN number but a quick call to them should yield some answers.

Did you buy the car from the dealer? if yes it shouldn't be costing you anything.... they should be sorting that out for you ]

If you can't get one supplied FOC,I believe that BMW can supply a 'service' key which is cut to operate locks and ignition with transponder for the immobiliser but excludes remote functions.If I remember correctly this costs around £45 and your dealer will order for your VIN.They will not hand over the key without proof of ownership,ie V5 etc.See linked thread.

on a related note. My V5 has in big writing ''this is not proof of ownership'' written on the front page and that it is merely proof of registration witht he DVLA and i would need to produce my dealer reciept for proof. I'd assume if i was to sell the car that i'd need to write out a reciept aswell as the new owner strip inside the v5. Can anyone clear that up?

Well, more a second hand BMW car dealer so I M on my own now lol

To be fair, my fault not checking at time of purchase. I was too goggle eyed with my new toy!

Hi Zedzen,

I bought a new key from a BMW dealer for £45+vat. I think I had to produce my V5 and photo id eg passport, driving licence.

It isn't a service key, it has a little torch on it, but it isn't a remote key.

I do have key insurance, I am not very good with keys! I have it on the keys to both cars, I claimed for the BMW key and have lost my other car key, the finder claimed their £100 and I got my keys back the same day!

It costs me £15 a year but has been worth it so far.

Cheapest way to get a fully functional remote key :-

buy a standard (non-remote) key from BMW for around £45 (this gives you a working transponder chip)
buy a second hand 3 button remote key off Ebay (this gives you the working remote innards - take your time and you'll get one for 5 or 10 pounds)
buy a new uncut blade 3 button key shell off ebay (this gives you your host key)

Carefully split the key you got from BMW to remove the transponder chip, put this and the working remote innards into the new key shell. Now all you need to do is pay a locksmith to cut your blade to match your other key and you can program your remote to operate your central locking yourself (it's in the manual).

Total cost should be around £80.

Make sure you buy the right second hand key though (ie one battery vs 2 battery version).
