My 'other' car, bought just over two years ago and used mainly in wales has a computer display that says my average speed since buying the car is 14mph. Now I don't crawl around at a snails pace holding up traffic. I don't hang around. Somehow I don't think the new speed limits will make much difference.

Hmmm, I beg to differ

No issues with speed limits in general but the 20mph limits, Jesus Mary and Joseph WTF 🤬 Everywhere in Scotland, must've had a "buy one get 86 million free sale 😤 I'm sure I've lost a few birthdays in these zones 😳

The stats are proof that the 20 mph zones are complete nonsense, 85 % of drivers not complying ( most by 10 mph) , my hybrid work van is speed monitored and at 5 am in the morning on completely empty roads I’m being overtaken by cyclists 🤷‍♂️

Cornwall seems to have added loads of new 20mph zones since last summer. I don’t see anyone driving differently though. I get it outside schools during term time, or a suburban road that’s not a thoroughfare where kids are playing in the street, but for an A or B road passing through a village it seems too slow most of the time.

FFS kids shouldn't be playing in the streets these days. It's not the 1950s.

Yeah. Why should the little tykes be out in the sun and fresh air when they could be up a chimney somewhere? Little ba5stards, enjoying themselves, how very dare they? Especially when there are grown-ups around that must improve their personal best on the way to Lidl. Don't they realise that seconds are important?

I spent a lot of my time in germany. Over there many, if not most, cities have a thing called "grüne Welle". (In english= Green Wave". This is where a serial of traffic lights are connected and coordinated in such a way that once you pass through the first one you are 100% guaranteed to hit every subsequent set of lights on green on the assumption that you drive at the speed limit.

Now, In Wales, when I go to Lidl I go through about 3 sets of lights. And you can guarantee that the tw*ts who went screaming past my drive way over the speed limit as I was trying to get out are now sat in front of me at the lights. And as soon as the lights change they're off wheels spinning - to the next set of lights - where I'll join them in a couple of minutes.

Now. In Hamburg if they reduced the speed limit on that long road with 50 sets of lights forcing me to drive at 32KMPH (20MPH) then that would really slow me down because I just don't hit any traffic lights and I'd cover the whole distance at 20mph. But in Wales. Where you can guarantee I hit a LOT of lights. Then the difference between 30 and 20 is not going to add any time (at all) to my short journey to Lidl.

As I said above. My current average speed in wales, including longer faster trips, but mostly in town, is 14mph. I will eat my hat (I will go out and buy a hat first) if my average speed limit is affected, at all, by the reduction from 30 to 20.

But them I'm biased. I live on a 40mph road and it's being reduced to 30. having said that. Hardly anyone obeys the 40 so I don't see why they should obey the 30 either. Their average speed wont change either because we all spend over half of our journey time at the lights. Just the speeders spend more time waiting at the lights that those of us who drive sensibly.

Even in Porthcawl you have to slow down for corners or to check for other traffic. (and, in your case, give way to tourists who don't know where they're going).

The 20 mph limit does not affect your whole journey. It only affects the tiny bit of it where you might, occasionally get over 20mph when there's not some tourist driving at a snails pace looking for a parking space.

Shirl came home from Gainsborough yesterday afternoon (6 miles) all the way in a train of vehicles doing 20 mph. This is a main "A" road (A156) which is national limit of 60mph with only 1 village about 1.5 from home. Some doddering old t**t in a Chtrysler 300.
This is what the police should be clamping down on, in my humble opinion.

Tony.

The road train travels at 20 mph and there is always a long queue of traffic behind it. I think it will massively impact things...you don't.. Happy to agree to disagree

What a load of bolacks that report is. Just shows where the nanny state is taking things. No matter the signposted speed limit, safe and efficient driving is that the driver drives within his/her ability and to the conditions. This requires personal responsibility (30/20 mph is too fast around schools (sometimes)). In the New Forest there is a blanket 40mph speed limit (largely unenforceable unless you are blind); sometimes 10mph is too fast (approaching a newly born foal on the verge for example), at other times when in open forest on a clear day Vmax is safe; you would be amazed how many plod along at 38 mph (in their "white goods") in all conditions, including dense fog with zero visibility.
I wonder how many of these 20mph limits are enforceable; if they are not enforced, the law is an ass. :(

Might even be an idea to teach people how to drive, as opposed to merely passing a test. Just a thought. There's some shocking examples out there, I'm sure you've all seen a few. Really pi55es me off when the lard-ar5ed slobs haven't even got the strength to move that big heavy stick that makes those funny yellow lights flash on the outside. Who do they think they are? BMW drivers?????
