Sub Woofer

Having thought hard about, always wanted a more OEM look, so on buying my oem roll hops with plastics for the sub woofer decided to review how the oem one works and the potential to improve, and this has lead to this simple box delight:

It is a pair of 8ohm woofers 100rms each, linked up to a Fli 300 watt bridged amp and to the head unit.

The box sits comfortably between the roll hoops in the cavity as designed OEM, sound is great, just got too get the spray glue off my hands now before final fit

Did you make the box and can you do some pics of it mounted before the plastics are in place ? I have my sub facing upward on the top but if I can drop it in the space underneath then the HK sub grill will allow the sound to come forward so interested to see it in place

I put it in last night, when i finished the hoop install, will take some pictures over the week end, i did not do a wiki on this run as it was really suck it and see, but when i remake with thinner MDF i will wiki the build.

I did make the box myself, dimensions are 30cm by 16cm by 8cm, i used 12mm MDF but really could have, should have, used thinner, maybe 8 or 10 mm, as it is all about just making an enclosure that holds the speakers and fits snug, remember it is replacing a blown plastic enclosure of the HK so will be better by nature of the materials.

The secret is in the HiFi Woofers being HiFi they are 8ohm but on a bridged amp set up become 4ohm so the amp works no problem, i now get good hifi quality bass (AC/DC and Santana drums and guitar are superb), rather than thump thump. I got the idea after opening up the sub on my home theatre set up and then purchasing some similar which actually only cost £25 for the pair, the important bit is the overall thickness, these are just under 3 inches deep, the magnet however is as wide as the speaker itself and gives 100wrms. The Vibe Cable Post and carpet came in at £10.

If you have the HK sub enclosure there is a mod where you can put a kicker sub woofer in it.

That's great, thanks for the info. Yah I have the HK enclosure and made a box inside with the sub sitting on the top but getting it down inside with the oem cover over the top and sound coming forward would be much better I think

yeah this is forward facing, makes a huge difference

Forgot to say, make sure that that the Hz range is correct on the woofers the ones i have used have a range of 40 to 10.000 Hz, most cross overs on amps only go down to 50Hz, below this is only vibration and no human audible sound, and you want it set at around 75 - 100Hz Hz for musical bass fill, mid speakers start from between 100 and 500 hz so are no good as bass speakers.

I have managed to locate some 6mm MDF sheet so will do the wiki how to build over the next couple of weeks, and will post the exact dimensions for this box also

I never seem to stand still, and I did say I would make mk2 and provide all the dimensions, well after several months I have managed to source a kicker 6.75 woofer:

I will be making the next enclosure from 6mm MDF, I have checked the new sub against the current enclosure and it sits comfortable with in the dimensional envelope, I will provide the build detail tomorrow, but this will provide 150w RMS forward facing sub inside the current HK sub area, so need to modify the car plastics or interior. I have also decided I am going to fit some 6" pioneers in the foot wells as well, following the upgrade to my T5, I have to have the speakers in the Z3.
