symptoms of a failing vanos

Evening chaps!
As above... what's the signs?

This is what I encountered the other night on a bit of a thrash.
On start up a little bit of a chattering noise,,more than normal anyway as with the S50 being noisy when cold.
Then after she was up to temp and I opened her up she felt like she was being held back, and the chattering noise was much louder.
I've not been back in the garage sice last week as I'm on shift, but thought i would see what your thoughts are?

Mine wasnt being held up on power but the noise made the engine sound like a diesel, more so after it had warmed up.

2 hours is a mere trip round the houses. He's 5/6 hours from us.

The guy is amazing tbh he did both my M's even knew I had the wrong viscosity oil in one of them, which I did, by the sound the engine made. To say that impressed me is an under statement.
