How would I know if my airbag is single or dual stage?

March 1999 M44 with the 'm' option steering wheel.

Use INPA to look into the airbag module and count the number of "firing circuits". Then count the number of airbags in your car.

I've now read two different things. One is that the dual stage came on z3's after May 1999.
The second theory is that Pre-Face lift have single stage and post face lift have dual stage.

Anyone know which, if any of those, is true?

Would I be able to tell by looking at the part number of the airbag module or steering wheel?

Look at the electric diagrams.
The single stage airbag has 2 wires. A brown and blue going to it.
The dual stage has 4 wires, grey/black grey/brown to yellow connector and yellow/brown olive/black to black connector.
attached is a photo of a dual stage plug, not from a Z3 (different colors) but you bet the idea.
just check your plug and the one on the airbag you are after.

Whatever you do don't rely on anything the Bentley's manual says. The most expensive book ever written and it only deals with the US market specs, which had massive differences in safety regs and specs to us!
