The Benefits of LSD

If BMW saw fit to offer all Z3 models with a limited slip differential and everyone recognises the safety and driving improvements they provide why didn't they persist with an LSD in the E85/E86 and E89 variants?

Some had it as standard, but was not an option to fit to all models. BMW were relatively selective in what they fitted them to. As to why not to fit them to any Z4 other than the M models I couldn't tell you, but I'd guess it was cost.

Though maybe its nice to have but do you really need it in lower BHP Zeds? the modern electronic devices take care of traction and stability, other than cars like Z4Ms and e89 3.0 / 35is where there is sufficient power to cause an issue where you maybe need the extra traction at the tyres but not the limiting effects associated with TCS or ESC? Just a thought. I'm not sure many Z3s needed it other than the M and maybe 3.0's

I agree Niall, but would add that the 23i, in sport mode, has enough power to make an LSD useful.

Not sure I agree Tony, the electronics manage it well and there not an abundance of power to the rears, now turn the electrics off and I would agree

That's when it could be an asset, same as any Z with the electronics turned off as some people insist they do.
