Well not a lot going on last Sunday so decided to strip the front suspension as last time I had the wheel off to mend the broken brake wear sensor it all looked a bit scabby.

I had refurbed the calipers in the summer so they were ok.
Caliper off, disc off and decided I couldn't get at the hub and control arm easily so out with more spanners and hammer and hey presto there it was all apart.

Painted the first side today and will have to strip the other side during the week.

Stripped down

Painted.

And the hub carrier. (It's the caravan battery in the background.)

Well both sides stripped and painted now, just waiting for the new drop links to arrive. It seems they have been lost in the post.
I replaced them a while back with cheap ones and that was a mistake as the rubber bush has perished already.

More pics when it's done. (slow progress cos it's cold and all the bits are on the radiator drying)

Well the 2nd set of drop links finally arrived the other week and manager to get it all back together on the 12 th and pleased with the results. Frightened myself because when I first started it up a battery was flatish and both ABS and DSC lights were on so immediately thought I had damaged one or both sensors. Anyway plugged the INPA laptop in and showed both front sensors faulty rest them and lights are off. It must have logged the faults when I turned the ignition on to turn off the steering lock and the sensors were disconnected.

And the new drop links made by Meyle and have 4 year warranty. Much better quality than the previous ECP supplied ones.

Just had to replace both my front ones for the MOT, strange design with these, when you pinch up the bottom bolt it leaves no room for movement as the wishbone moves up and down, therefore the links rip themselves apart!

Hi Brian
That is what had happened to the previous ones but I read that you need to put the car on the ground and the weight on the suspension before tightening the lower bolts. Bit of a pain to get at the bolts especially with a sore shoulder. Will have to see how it goes.

Good call Brian, I'll try guesstimating with a trolley jack under the wishbone and then tighten them up :)

@Brian H, that's exactly the way to go, when fitting any suspension arm with that type of bush the arm needs to be in the "working height range" before tightening the mounting bolts, otherwise the bush is twisting and trying to tear itself apart from the off. Very easy on a 4 post lift, not so when working on the floor though.

You could always jack the hub up to ride height while on stands and then tighten
I think that's what Brian said Rich.
