Just joined and I have a 1997 Z-3. I have a question about the transmission switch (A on top and M on bottom). When mine is in the M mode, the M lights up, but when in A mode it doesn't light up. I have had the car since 2003 . Is it supposed to light up in both modes or only when in manual mode.?

Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like there are two light bulbs in the switch???
I guess I just answered my own question as the wiring diagram does show two light bulbs and I guess the A mode is burnt out.

The switch changes from auto to manual without any problem so not really a big deal. Thanks.

Welcome from St Georges Mb! The members from the UK usually have little concept about how far places are apart from one another. Anyhow, please let me know if you ever get out east for any reason. Can always meet up in Winnipeg which is about 120km south west of where I am!! JIM

Does anybody know if the bulb can be replaced or do I need to get a complete new switch, part # 61 31 1 387 858?

Welcome - I think it's complete switch but not 100% sure . EUR models have different number 61311387034 and look like photo below from underside. Bulbs appear to be integral. The selector panel is easily lifted out to check but take care when replacing as locator lugs around the stick shroud are very delicate.

Thanks for the reply. I removed and dismantled the switch. There are two rectangular amber lights attached to a printed circuit board with capacitors/resistors, etc. I have never seen this type of "bulb" before and don't feel confident trying to replace it or a resistor. I put it all back together and I am ordering a new one that I found on ebay at a good price (compared to dealer list).

Thanks Jim.
I have never been east of the Rockies in Canada. When we rode our bikes to Sturgis I made it as far east as a couple of hours due south of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. I prefer riding and driving in the west coast states and BC.
