My not cheap Yokohama tyres are less than 4 years old and have plenty of tread left but there are cracks between the treads. MOT failure ?

Not unless you can see cords or wires exposed, no.

Thanks Tony. It was an advisory on the last MOT so I was unsure whether it would be an issue this time.

On the side wall it will have a 4 digit date code. You'll likely find these have been sat on a shelf for a few years before fitting.

A tester is allowed to use a BLUNT tool to open the cracks to see if cords are exposed. I would be very surprised to see that tyre fail the MOT. That's not to say I would want it on my car, but that's another story.

Thanks Lee - they are dated Wk 26 2019 and I bought them in Nov. 2019 so they were only about 3 months old. Formula One got them specially for me as it wasn't a tyre they stocked at the time. My local repair garage said it was either because I had painted the side walls (!) or because I had run them at the wrong pressures (no) ......

My rear tyres are starting to crack the same way. 2yr old Avon ZV7’s. 10k miles. Seen other people complaining about this elsewhere.

Some brands are more susceptible to cracking in the bottom of the grooves than others. Not necessarily connected to age of tyres as much as the rubber itself.

Its the compounds.
Most summer tyres have tweaked their compounds slightly to use less raw products like natural rubber and raw silicates.
Leaving the tyre more susceptible to cracking due to temperature and humidity changes and the compounds ability to expand and contract also lessons its uv durability too.
You see a lot if brands even premium ones starting to crack at a relatively young age.
Stephen.
