I have been trying to track down some Avon tyres for my zed but unfortunately no one seems to have the wider rear tyres in stock. They are 245/40/17s. Even Avon don't seem to have any and aren't sure when a new batch will be made. Its not urgent so I might wait to see if any come in to stock, but what other tyres do people recommend. The Avon's would have been £260 from ATS for the four and just over £300 from FormulaOne Autocentres.

I’m not the person to ask about Avon tyres. I’ve had them and they were not great: poor quality and didn’t hold the road well, in my opinion. Only lasted a few thousand miles before they needed replacing and I’m no boy racer. The best I’ve had are Michelin.

Hello,
I’m afraid I have to agree with ktnez99 on the tyre front, Michelin especially Pilot sport I would highly Recommend.
Regarding Avon, the ZV7 is a much improved tyre and probably just scrapes into the Premium bracket, I’m getting a pair of 225 40 18 fronts tomorrow from ATS while they have a sale on, so I must have faith,

if interested I have

2 x 225 45 17 pilot sport 4 with 6mm tread
1 x 245 40 17 pilot sport 3 brand new

1 x 225 45 17 ZV7 with 6mm
1 x 245 40 17 ZV7 with 6-7 mm
All no damage or punctures with perfect side walls.

Regards

Dakar

Thanks for the offer, I will probably wait until the Avons come in to stock near me. You would think one of the five tyre fitters within a mile of my house would have them. It seems they don't hold the less common sizes in stock and order them in as needed. As Avon have run out and aren't sure when the next batch will be made I may just have to wait.

I've been very pleased with my Hankook Ventus Prime3. Excellent grip in the wet and dry, quiet and fairly durable , but around the £90 mark for rears.
Mine are currently on 12,000 miles ish:thumbsup:

I can 2nd (possibly 3rd) KTNez99 & Dakar Z3, I've replaced Avons with Michelin Pilot Sports 4 a few months ago and can't believe how good they are when compared with Avon, much much better grip in all weathers and much quieter.

Would never go back to Avons.

I don't know if you can get Generals in GB, but the General G-MAX AS is my favorite. You may not want an all season tire (tyre), but for me they have the right stickiness, rain traction and ride quality that I really like. Quiet too. They are rated as 50 K tire, but I doubt that they will last that long. I don't use the brakes hard or floor board it off the line, but I do like to zoom the corners.

I've been using the avons all round for years Because off tramlineing issues....the side walls are just right to stop it.
Bear in mind that I do have H&Rs on with the B8's.
I've just put the V7s on the rear and they are very sensitive to the pressures.
Absolutely awful when pumped up to the recommended psi.
However when I reduced the pressures I can't fault them....i can push them as hard as I want and no problem.
I've tried many different makes now and as of yet these suit my M more than any of the others.

The V3s being worked hard.

Just had some Hankook K120 evo2 tyres fitted. They performed brilliantly on the way home in the wet, at one point I got up to 20mph!

PS4s without hesitation. Best tyres I've had on any car. Not cheap but completely reliable in all conditions. There are probably better tyres if you want to live right on the edge but PS4s perform extremely well in all conditions.

No. I have used the Dunstable branch a few times and had no problems. I think its all depends on the staff employed by each branch. I had a Ford serviced and mot'd by a main dealer for years. I later found out much of the work paid to get it through its mot's had never been done.

I looked for some Michelin tyres but couldn't get the rear 245 tyres locally. It was the same for a few I looked at. As I wanted four tyres the same I went with the Hankooks as they seemed to tick all the boxes. Avon replied to a message I sent them and told me they were on back order but had no idea when they would be available. They would have been £100 cheaper.

Given my new hankook Ventus evo2 tyres a few miles today and they definitely feel smoother than the ones they replaced which were sumitomo,s. No sign of tramlining so far and they were quieter as well. So far so good.

Michelin Pilot Sports 👍. Have just had a new set to replace Avon’s that came on the car which didn’t really fill me with confidence. Tramlining completely gone with the Michelin’s - it was bad with the Avon’s.

When it comes to tyres, you should always check the quality of the rubber and see if the tyres are weatherproof. Since you ride often, the tyres would obviously damage due to low pressure. My suggestion is to go for Bridgestone Battlax BT-45:)
