Under bonnet cleaning

Someone (can't remember who, sorry) posted recently about having cleaned under the bonnet using Cif bathroom mousse, and I'd like to say that it really does work. The insulation panel that clings desperately to the underside of the bonnet has always looked as if a previous owner had run the car for a while without the dipstick in, this Cif stuff has brought it up like new. Wonderful,I reckon, and only £2 from Home Bargains (yep, Pwllheli has reached that level of sophistication, got a Home Bargains right opposite Wilkos). So, thank you whoever it was that posted about this before.

The really exciting thing though is you have a Home Bargains My favourite shop. We were due to finally get one in Swindon in April but it's got pushed back to June At least I get my fix when I'm in Swansea. 6 in and around Swansea I think it is!

I think the reason it works particularly well is because it's an emulsifier. In other words it lifts the oil and dirt off the surface like a snow foam on the bodywork. As opposed to grinding it in to the paint with a regular cleaner.

Anyway, instructions for use:

• Spray liberally one half of the engine bay at a time (drys out by the time you reach the other side if you try it all in one go)
• Leave 2-3 mins
• Agitate with a 2" paint brush. It won't shift stubborn/heavy deposits by itself so I wipe that off with a heavy duty hand wipe then go back over it with the cif to remove the residue
• Rinse off with a hose
• As well as doing the painted surfaces I've done the plastics around the edge as well with no ill effects, wiring/fusebox covers radiator shroud, expansion tank, washer reservoir etc
• I've avoided the engine itself but that might be me being over-cautious.

My thanks to you, must admit I was a tad sceptical at first, but it sure does work, really pleased with what it did to the insulation stuff, it was really manky but cleaned up almost like new.

I haven't tried it on the insulation yet. In fact I wasn't going to as I didn't think it would do a job. But if your're saying it does, well I'll happily give it ago.

Shifted the well-and-truly-dried-on brown cruddy stain above the dipstick straight off. Does a good job of cleaning, don't think I'd like to swallow any of it.
