Water in roof motor - which models are affected?

Hi, I'm new to the forums and thinking about upgrading my (t)rusty Mazda MX5 to a BMW Z4 but I'm a little put off by the water in the roof motor issues. Is it all marks of Z4 that are affected by this or just the earlier E85 models?

Do the E89s suffer from this too? How common is the issue in older Z4s?

One of the zed 4 owners will along soon but as far as I know only E85 models affected.
You might find one with motor relocation to boot carried out if not this is still a job than can be carried out.

Hi love got a 2006 e85 repaired motor & moved to boot ..no big deal + get big discount or not working when purchased

You should never worry about the roof motor it is always fixable and not an issue. And certainly not expensive to do.

As already stated the roof motor is a minor issue on a great car and easily fixed for not much money. The wealth on knowledge on here is well worth tapping into and can help to save you a small fortune.

Agree. Just relocated my motor myself. Would say to those on here why not have a go yourself and get huge satisfaction fromit.

Just the E85 with the problem. The motors seem to quite often work happily submerged in water until corrosion stops them. Even then they can be cleaned up and got working again. A common failure is loss of oil which is soon sorted.
Moving the motor to the gap between the wheel arch and the seat bulkhead is the solution and makes the motor more accessible should you need to get to it.

The E89 pump is in the boot. However, it is a far more complicated system. There are many sensors failure of any one of which will prevent the roof opening or closing. However, it is a work of art watching it operate albeit more slowly than the E85.

Potential problems with the roof should not stop you having either model. They are great cars - we have one of each.
