Hi all - I have recently had the crankshaft oil seal and elring seal replaced to fix an oil leak. After picking up the car, I have noticed this weird noise coming from the front of the car which I took a recording of. Anyone any ideas what this noise is/means and if its anything serious? Its only evident at very low speed, nothing heard when up to speed. The recording is pulling off from stationary at 1mph up an incline. I'll take it back to the garage but grateful for any views on this. Many thanks !

I would jack up the front of the car and spin the wheels in turn. That sounds to me like something wheel speed related not motor.

Tony.

ps. Where are you located please?

If you are free tomorrow you are welcome to come to the shed in Lydney, just down the road for you and we can stick it on the ramp and have a look/listen. PM me for directions if interested.

Many thanks. It’s gone back to the garage that did the original work As identified the noise is coming from the transmission which they had worked on.

Thanks for views so far.
So the car has been in the garage a total of 6 weeks now. Just had it back after they replaced the clutch including slave cylinder and flywheel which ‘ may have’ been issue according to garage.

I’m not happy as;

the noise is still there

The clutch is terrible now with masses of free play at the top of the pedal. Appreciate it needs to bed in but gear changes are also really difficult with shifts being almost impossible into 1st and second (wondered if air in it?)

Anywsy thought I’d update on progress, or rather lack of it!

You said they originally worked on the transmission but didn't say what they had done. So what work did they do?

Hi, They replaced the main seal for an oil leak. After getting it back it had the whining noise. Clutch changed but noise is still there and now the shifts are terrible too.

OK so I am assuming input shaft seal? Maybe they damaged the input shaft bearing? That would make it whine.

Just listened to your recording again, that dosent sound like a whine it sounds like something rubbing.

I think tony knows what he's on about. Noise related to roadspeed rather than engine speed.

I'd be going to an industrial eatate at night when theres no traffic. Open all the windows. Start the car rolling till you hear the noise. Shift to neutral and switch off the engine while the car is still rolling. Listen. (Don't take the key out of the ignition and don't head for an obstacle coz your steering and brakes will be a bit hard)

Many thanks for the suggestions, So the current position is I took it to the second garage. They noticed the rear main seal was still slightly leaking, although it had been repaired. They also said the noise is coming from the gearbox area but could not say what it was without taking the gearbox off. Unfortunately they said they were too busy for a ‘big job’ which is fair enough. on a positive the new clutch has bedded in now and gear changes much better.

Hi everyone, thanks for your advice on this. Long story short, the noise is from the gearbox so I am having a reconditioned gearbox fitted next month as I really like the car and the squeaking at very low speed is annoying.
Unfortunately, the engine light has now come on. Its a pre-cat O2 sensor that is the problem. The car is OK but now hessitates sometimes and fuel economy is slightly down which I believe are classic O2 sensor symptoms. The gearbox is being changed in 2 weeks and I can ask them to change the O2 sensor when they do it. I've bought a new Bosch sensor. Is it OK to use the car in the meantime with the faulty sensor or should I really be getting that done immediately ? Many thanks

Bosch sensors usually work out of the box they are oem fitment.
Your duff sensor will be affecting the fuel trims of the car but you should get away with having it changed when the gearbox work is carried out.
