So, when I was drying my car this afternoon I realised the paintwork is "rough" and needs some clay bar action. Does anyone have any info as to favoured type/make etc. Never used one before so I thought it was time I aquainted myself. Thanks.

Tony.

same here never used a clay bar before so while I was at the shop n shine event last weekend I asked them for some info on the matter.
The young chap told me there are 3 grades, smooth, medium and course. He recommended the medium one.
He said to wash the car then use the clay bar on one panel at a time keeping the clay wet with a spray of water or your usual car wash mixture. Then pollish followed by a sealer.
I bought a Bilt Hamber clay bar as was cheaper the the alternative but he said they're all pretty much the same.
Not had time to use it yet though .

I'd start off with what you can get from Halfords. There are various types, but the kits come with the required spray to lubricate the paint surface.

I recently bought a G3 clay mit to use on my car, I use it when I wash the car, it does the job very well.

Cheers Gaz, I'll pop round to Halfords before next weekend, probably Autoglym, would be in their stock. I like Autoglym products so I'll give it a go.

Halfords sell them @t-tony, I also bought some Zymol wash and wax, as well to use with the clay mit.

Been using clay bar for a while now, makes a big difference, paint looks cleaner and easier to polish once clay barred.

I brought a clay Mitt really easy to use .Meguires make it and it advises to use the speed/spot detailing spray as a lubricant.
Worked really well on my Zed again you can get from Halfords

I had the Zed professionally detailed at the weekend, the guy used a clay mit. Plenty of water on the area your claying and kept dipping it back in the water every 30secs or so. Made the paint so smooth.

If never used a clay bar before try a kit as said I would use a Maguire's kit first time out but use plenty of lube and keep folding the bar to clean bits otherwise you will marr the paintwork.
Claymits are fairly new to the market but you need to keep rinsing in clean water mits can be used a few times which is cost effective.
Cheers
Cliff.

As Lee said when using a clay mit, keep it clean by constantly circulating it in water. When I did mine I used plenty of Zymol wash and wax, It was on offer in Halfords when I bought the clay mit, wash a small area at a time, if there is any grime on the car use the reverse side of the mit first, then the clay side.

The claybar kit from Meguirs is a good place to start as it comes with Quick Detailer lubricant.

makes such a massive difference. just remeber to wash your car before and after the claying.

As above, both the Autoglym and Meg's kits should see you well.

Be aware that you will more than likely end up with some clay marring once you are finished - not a problem if you are machine polishing afterwards but otherwise will need to be 'hidden' by a filler heavy paint cleanser / glaze.

Glaze you can use Poor boys black hole or Prima Amigo both have fillers in them for very light imperfections but you must put a wax or sealant of your choice over the top otherwise wasting your time using it.

Cheers Cliff.
