Which Fault code reader/reset tool- help a new'b...

Hi all

Hoping to benefit from all of your experience, as I'm coming to the world of the Z3 from the pre-electronic world of 80's Alfa's and early Vag-Com VW's.

I'm just starting the recommisioning of a '98 2.8 that been garaged/dry-stored since 2006.So i'm expecting there to be at least a few electrical gremlins, to say the least. I have got a copy of TIS

So my question is which fault code/reader reset tool would you guys reccomend to a new comer to all things BMW... I've had a search through the forums, as well as searching ebay etc, but ending up with more q's than answers, particular when it comes to connector type, seperate reset/code reader tools etc.

Your help/advice would be greatly appreciated and apolgies / feel free to berate me/point me in the right direction if this question has been answered many times before.

Depends what faults you want to read I've got a peake reader which reads engine codes and resets service lights etc. but it doesn't reset the airbag light or read the abs system hth. Oh yes and welcome to the club!

Yeah there's one you can hook upto a laptop that does everything I'm sure someone will be along soon to help I can't remember what it's called.

and this for airbag lights ( i think it can do more than airbag but i have never needed to)

+1 for the BM Technic Solution, Loadsof software to play with and interesting car data, INPA will be your main stay and will reset all lights service and airbag, as well as present fault codes to allow diganostic of problems, cost £45 quid and has already paid back in spades :-bd

Next question, is the 20pin under bonnet connector (as per the BMtechnic / generic reset tool necessary) as I have an existing OBDii type connector for VAG-COM use?

If my poor It skills have worked there should be a picture of it forlorn on the back of a low loader on the way to its current abode. I'll take some more when it stops raining...

Your cars a pre facelift 2.8 by the looks of it and they don't have an OBDII port so the only way you'll get plugged in is through the 20pin pacman under bonnet socket.
