After deliberating whether to repaint the bases on my mirrors, I finally bought the plastic replacement from here www.spiegel-z3.de, the pair painted Cosmos Schwarz were €236 incl P&P and new gaskets 51167001040 + 51167001039 were £9.60 from BMW.
Following on from the guide on here for removing the mirrors... https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z3-mirror-base-refurbishment.66/
- by coincidence that was written by R37 (Dan) on here, who I bought my car off.
Bases showing their age
Mirror prised off and casing removed
Base removed using T25 hex
Prise apart the connector, don't hold back - they will separate
Remove the mirror motor using & thread the connector and cable through the base column
Rethread the connector through the new base and secure the motor to the replacement mirror housing
My mirror casings had a few stone chips, so i put the Chipex kit to use and then polished up with Autoglym SRP - other polishes available!
Re-fitted on the car and mirror attached - door card still lay on the passenger seat
Overall I am very pleased with the result - cannot fault Udo for the mirrors, they will definitely outlive the rest of the the Z. Hope this helps other mirror corrosion sufferers!
cheers
