so today i put a set of winters on the car as i do every year whether i am running in a FWD or RWD car they have not failed me yet, just wondering if anyone else does this and if not, why not? i know some of you by law have to do it but here in Ireland we dont have to, not sure about UK, dont think so.. maybe those who do this might be able to convince those who dont with a list of pros on why it is a good idea to do so ;-)

We run 4 winter tires on our 91 merc and 2013 ford fusion. Had just two on the front drive wheels on an 05 Nissan Altima and that piece of crap got stuck in absolutely nothing. The other two went through just about everything never getting stuck. The softer compounds and tread designs made driving and braking seen like summer. I would definitely recommend all 4 wheels but two are so much better than all season by far. Be safe this winter!! JIM

The reason for putting the fronts on also is the braking distance is cut down considerably as well as steering is more positive. I travelled through the Rockies pulling a small loaded trailer in March a few years ago and was sure glad the winter tires were on the Benz. Traction was awesome so when my wife bought the Fusion last December we ordered the winter tires to be installed before we picked the car up. Again it was almost like driving in summer. JIM

I have winter tyres in the garage, just haven't got them swapped over yet this year.

The traction definately feels alot better vs the summer tyres and the braking distance stats speak for themselves.

Maybe it should be law to have winters & we wouldnt have to suffer grit sprayed all over the paintwork

it should be law Ash, you are right... ok we dont get mad snow bound winters but we do have a long enough period of time where the temps would be under 7 degrees, which is where standard road tyres start to lose out. Its really not a done thing in the UK or Irl and i dont get it, why people would risk themselves or their cars for the sake of a few quid... the difference is black and white, its that much for anyone who hasnt used them yet :)

Its not law over here but, as I typed before, I drive on them all year round.
I like the softer tire wall for a nicer ride and have never had tram lining issues while running them.

No, you have to cross the border in to Germany before it becomes law as far as I am aware.

I also run the winters all year round on the Benz for the same reasons! JIM

have run vredestein winters on 16" type 35 zstars for past 4 years on my E88 s and am always amazed at grip and confidence they provide in cold ,ice and snowy conditions. Prices can be great too if bought out of season.... and don't forget to tell insurers you're running them,in my experience they're always good with it,no extra premiums.
