April 2016 whilst driving on the motorway, a pheasant struck the front of the bonnet and made a fist sized dent and knocked out the offside grill. As far as the Insurance company was concerned repair cost approx. £2000 hence write off, I was offered £2500 by the insurance company but I declined. Did not want to Cat D the car hence started my refurb project. Managed to get bonnet repaired and fully resprayed at main dealer body shop for £350. (Insurance company eventually paid for repair, paint , new BMW bonnet badge and new grills £440 altogether).
I removed the wings and sills and was shocked by the level of corrosion. Wings cleaned up ok, sills where shot.....Ongoing work...just had doors, wings and front bumper repainted. Brake pipe replacements in the planning stages.

I agree that insurance has to start looking at those alternatives. Our provincial insurance will not write off older vehicles with minimal damage and will actually authorize the one off manufacture of some parts for particular vehicles. The owner is given an option up to $x to get it fixed or write it off so a bit more fair to those of us with old cars. Enjoy your project and good luck! JIM

Insurance companies are the first part in a chain that is a money making scam. They're no longer acting in any way in the interests of car owners. Time for a competition commission investigation.
Good on you doing the job yourself.
