For a couple of days it was driving me nuts and getting worse. Three suspects - rubbing of steering wheel on cowling (which showed visible vibration coinciding with the noise); friction around slip ring and finally the U joints on the other side of the firewall.
Decided to start with the easiest - But lubing the U joints did not do much. When the car heated up in the sun the squeaking got worse. Pushing and pulling the wheel has a dramatic effect - so it’s obviously contact with the cowling...
Is there a simple way to move the wheel a fraction of an inch toward the driver?

I had the same issue. Mine was the slip ring rubbing. I tried greasing the plastic areas and even trimming some parts. Nothing resolved it apart from purchasing another slip ring and fitting it.

I just sorted mine. I took off the metal spacer behind the steering wheel and added behind it a hand fabricated a narrow 1mm spacer.
The fun of owning a 21 year old car...
