Hi All

i am after a bit of advice on the Z4 Coupe

I really like the look of them and am considering getting one for work, it won’t be used every day but at least once a week for 100 mile round trip.
the ones I can afford all have over 100k, is there anything I need to look for other than FSH?

what are peoples thoughts on them?

Servicing as usual is key. With Z4’s generally its springs snapping, but with the N52 engine you should really look at whether the water pump has been replaced if over 80k. They are electric and they are not cheap to replace. Reading codes if you get chance is always worthwhile as well. Factor in bushes and suspension possibly on higher mileage cars.

There are 2 trim levels SE and Sport, so go for a sport for the better seats. Don’t worry about factory sat nav, you’re not missing out on much.

I always wanted a Coupe but ended up with a 3.0si which is the same engine, I commuted 350 miles a week for 8 months in it and on a run it would get around 40mpg.

i know I could get a newer roadster with lower miles but feel that the coupe is an itch that I’ve just got to scratch.

I previously owned an Alpine White E86, fantastic car and beautiful engine. When looking, bear in mind that a good number of Sports were wrongly registered by dealers as SE spec. As has been said, sports seats if you do go for a genuine SE.

At this age, buy on condition and history, so don’t be put off by high miles. My only caution at present, is that the market has high miles examples at above average prices. I mean £2k above pre-Covid market. Personally, I’d wait until after lockdown, when I’d expect greater numbers on the market.

The car suits auto, but my preference is for a manual. You might hear some ticking noise in neutral when at normal engine temp, that goes away when the clutch is depressed. It seems common, so if the clutch is working fine, don’t be put off.

Front fog lights fill with water, can easily be replaced. As has been said, water pump change is good prevention.

2007 on models have Aux input, which is handy. Can be retrofitted and there are other connectivity options. Don’t chase a Nav option, as it’s pretty useless and the dash looks better without.

prices do look a bit steep at the moment, I just thought it was based on supply and demand.

do you think £9k is a bit steep for one with about 80k and good history? the car I’m looking at has passed the last 6 years MOT without any advisories so doesn’t look bad on paper

I’d say £9k for 80k miles would be good value, even in ‘normal’ times.

You might be looking for a long time to meet that MOT criteria. Things wear out even on the best maintained cars, so advisories aren’t an issue, but look to see the same items don’t keep appearing. That would suggest minimal maintenance.

There was a 1 owner with 60k miles a couple of weeks ago at £9200 on AT. It sold immediately, dealer now has it at just under £15k.
