Considering a nice low mileage 2.2 2004 Z4 pre facelift being sold locally but there is an issue with the roof.. roof motor failed just over a year ago and owner paid just shy of £1000 to get it replaced. Was all good until about 6 months ago and he said it now lifts about 20% then stops and you have to then push it manually the rest of the way to get it down.. same coming back up albeit reversed (manually for the first bit then electrically for the last). He admits he has been lazy not taking it back to garage and thinks the garage wont accept responsibility over a year down the line..

Does this sound like the death of the new motor or could it be something simple and unconnected?

The car has a lot going for it but l dont want a load of aggro or expense with the roof..

It could possibly be that the hydraulic fluid level is low Alan. Has he got a receipt for the motor replacement ?

Tony.

I would want the roof fixed before buying as they can be quite costly depending on what is wrong. Give him @t-tony advice and that way if it does not cure it you can walk away

Silly question but is the pump/motor running?

Is it "noisier" at the point where it isn't moving properly? If so it could be low on oil, most of them are believe it or not.

If the motor is actually woking, this could be a hydraulic problem, which is rare but does happen. I've repaired over 150 Z4 roofs and have seen hydraulic issues (other than leaking pipes) on only one other.

Have you at any time operated the manual release (red hoop) or has it been knocked by something in the boot? The actual release pin on the pump head is VERY prone to seizing, and it could be this. It's a motor out job, but the roof DOESN'T need to come off, and I can do these in my sleep in about 40 mins.

IF you can get a chunk off the price, then I would have no problem buying one with a faulty roof.
