There are several different names for the later type of auto, BMW call it Tiptronic but I think it is the same thing.
So, basically you knock the shift across and you choose when to change gear, I once had a Mitsubishi FTO V6 MIVEC, that was the same, I had it for 7 years and as much as I loved the car I always thought it would be more fun had it been manual

I think it's the same old adage isn't it......you pays your money you takes your choice.

As I have previously stated, my E46 330d is an auto - it's very easy to drive and pretty rapid and I love it. That said, it's not the same as hanging onto a gear as you need to and if it drops the box it's not a cheap fix.

I think ideally, I would have one of each but I am trying to keep my collection under control.=))

@Sean d The difference in performance is very noticeable. The 2.2 is quick.. The 2.8 is a great z3 too.. but the extra in the 3.0 is very very welcome. Also mine is a manual and it was a very long search. Hence why I traveled just south of the scottish border to buy her.

Sorry to but in =)) The 3.0 Litre is about 40 BHP more power , the rear differential gearing is a different ratio , so a straight swop of the engine is not "straight forward". Better off just buying mine

Don't build what you can buy.

So much hassle to swap in a 3.0 when a set of cams and a m50 manifold will give you the same power from the 2.8

Yeah I think it would be a lot of hassle. I think a 330 manifold would be enough - I also think in the everyday real world driving the 2.8 is quick enough.

There's a nice auto on eBay but it's that preference of auto or manual again. I'm happy with my car so it's all good

We had a 2006 Z4 3.0 si in last week. I took it out on Saturday for a 5 mile run and by the time I got back my left knee was hurting, don't know if the clutch was particularly heavy or not but would not be any point in me buying a manual if that's how they are. I'll stick to my Auto thanks.:)
